If my house is having a carbon monoxide leak will the alarm just beep and stop or is that a sign the bat r bad?

carbon monoxide alarm just beeped on Smoke Detectors: How many do I need & why?
carbon monoxide alarm just beeped image

Mallorie

A week ago our CO alarm went off and I pressed the reset button and it stopped, I forgot to change the batteries, and it went off again a week later. I changed the batteries and it beeped 3 times and stopped. If I really was having a carbon monoxide leak would my alarm just stop beeping?

Answer
The beeping for when batteries are low is different from when you actually have a CO leak. The beeping for low batteries is one beep every couple of minutes. The beeping for a CO leak is continuous. Replace your batteries, anyway. They are cheap and you want to be safe. Change them yearly. Change the CO alarm every 5 years.

You don't. If it starts beeping, get out and call the fire department.

I haven't burnt a fire in our stove in over a week. But, I haven't been feeling well the last few days. I went to the doctor today and she said she could smell smoke on me and wanted to check me for carbon monoxide. Today is friday and I won't know anything until monday. I am kinda worried.

Answer
I really doubt the coals would still be smoldering, but if you have any concerns what so ever, I would go to the local hardware store and buy a Carbon Monoxide detector. You could even call the fire dept. and see if they would recommend any particular model or brand. Whatever the price, it is well worth the peace of mind knowing that if the gas is present, that you would be alerted to it.

what is the best home security alarm?

wHoSaIdThA

What is the price to install and the price per month?

Answer
My suggestion would be to ask around locally. Try to find a company that is small enough to care but with enough track history to prove their ability. The average install rate for a full house is anywhere from 1200 upwards. Depening on the scope of protection, if you want smoke detectors, carbon monoxide, motion, glassbreak, number of keypads, number of contact, difficulty of installation etc.

Window screens are a good idea, I haven't really seen them around for a number of years and I do remember there being the occasional issue with wire tears, they can be fairly delicate.

Typically monitoring rates around here (Canada) tend to be around the $25 per month range. There are a few companies that will go lower to build up a sellable acount base but from customer feedback, their service tends to be fairly lacklustre.

I have written a number of articles on security systems and home security in general, they can be found on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. Some articles of interest might be protection101, false alarm info and there is an article on the truth about wireless "security systems" in the archive. Wireless systems are definately something to avoid at all costs. a qualified alarm installer should be able to hardwire almost anything.

Good Luck

Beginning as of July 1, 2011, all homes of California must install carbon monoxide detectors. However does the law specify where the detectors are to be installed and how many? Should I just replace every smoke detector with a carbon monoxide/smoke detector or add carbon monoxide detectors in specific spots?

Answer
Our towns code states that there should be one for every smoke-detector. And there has to be 1 smoke detector on each story + one in each room that could, possibly, maybe be used as a bedroom someday + one directly outside each room that could, possibly, maybe be used someday as a bedroom + one inside and outside each hallway + one by each egress door + one within 5 feet of the furnace + one in each bathroom
I would need 17 in the house I'm living in. Since the regulations are so stupid and overbearing, I only have 1 (and am in gross violation of the International Property Maintenance Code)

on a nighthawk detector what numbers are considered unsafe?

Nay

We have a Nighthawk carbon monoxide detector in our home. The number 8 just recently appeared on the screen. Should we be concerned? No alarm has gone off.

Answer
I just installed one of those the other day and I would have sworn that 8 was an error code that I got and that you just have to unplug the detector and plug it back in. But I just looked at the manual online and there is no mention of 8 being an error code. It does display "888" for a few seconds when you fist plug it in.

If it is steadily displaying an 8 then that is the level of carbon monoxide that it has detected since last reset. On the one hand that is a very low level and is safe - some references put the maximum continuous exposure level at 35 ppm and some say 50 ppm. Either way, 8 ppm is very low.

But then you have to wonder where the 8 ppm came from and if it is from a leak than may get worse over time. Having a CO detector is a good thing, it will make plenty of noise if the levels ever get to the point that you need to take action.

You could call Kidde at 800-880-6788 and talk to them if you want some reassurance.

i have a breckwell big e pellet stove that was recently installed. yesterday was the second time we've run it so far. we shut if off about 1030 and went to bed. at 6 am we awoke to our carbon monoxide detectors sounding. we opened the windows and they quickly shut off. after asking around, we've determined that the monoxide sensor may need to be replaced, or perhaps that our home is insulated very well, and we should consider drawing in fresh air for the stove. any insight anyone could provide for this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
All appliances that actually burn something be it oil gas or solid fuel need an air supply to compete combustion properly otherwise it produces the thing that set off your CO alarms, Carbon Monoxide. I would suggest you recall whoever installed it to return and do the job properly or if it was a DIY job check with the instructions or the manufacturer on their requirements/recomendations

Q. [this really isn't as long as it looks!]

So i'm falling so far behind on my biology assignments.[im home schooled] three assignments were snet back to me to redo.I had to redo them each four times. Theres only one question on each assignment i need to redo.I cant get it! i dint learn this at my old school before i started this.Help please?

-How are molecules transferred into and out of a cell?
[this is my answer: Diffusion.Molecules are transferred into and out of a cell by particles moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Transport proteins They are embedded in the phospho lipid bilayer]

The teacher said 'There is another way, too. Also what is the classification of the two ways (two words). This answer is pretty clear in the lesson.' Well i dont get it then!

-What impact do humans have on the carbon cycle? it gave this link but it doesn't work on my computer? http://www.marietta.edu/~biol/102/ecosystem.html
[my answer 'its long' Humans take fossil fuels, burn them to release energy, and produce CO2 in the atmosphere. Humans and other animals breathing CO2 is normal part of the cycle. Taking billions of years of collected solid carbon deposits, and burning them into the atmosphere as CO2 within a couple-hundred years, is NOT the normal part of the cycle. The CO2 breathing plants are not keeping up, and the CO2 is accumulating. It's bad that Carbon Dioxide is accumulating because it has a greater affinity for hemoglobin than oxygen and can kick the oxygen off of hemoglobin causing a person to suffocate, but you can't smell it or taste it so it is extremely dangerous. That's why they have home CO detectors.
]

'the teacher said You are confusing carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide'

Answer
-How are molecules transferred into and out of a cell?

The general term is *transport*. The two kinds are active and passive. Diffusion, like you mentioned is high to low concentration, a specific type of passive transport. Active transport is low to high concentration.

-What impact do humans have on the carbon cycle?

This is straight from the site you gave above:

"The outputs of respiration are the inputs of photosynthesis, and the outputs of photosynthesis are the inputs of respiration...Humans have a great impact on the carbon cycle because when we burn fossil fuels we release excess carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This means that more carbon dioxide goes into the oceans, and more is present in the atmosphere. The latter condition causes global warming, because the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere allows more energy to reach the Earth from the sun than it allows to escape from the Earth into space."

Carbon monoxide is the dangerous one you can't detect with the senses.

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

SO, I was wondering, I have a carbon monoxide detector in my basement, we also have one on the main floor, and one upstairs, the one in the basement is beeping, it says 0, so I don't know what is wrong with it, the other ones aren't going off, any ideas why this is? It just beeps every few seconds.
It stopped beeping after I re-set it once.

Answer
If it is just beeping like that, and the indicator says 0, it means the battery is getting low. Change it and it should be fine.

Which Carbon Monoxide Alarm is best and how many should a home have?

KBGood

They just passed a law in Illinois saying that you have to have a Carbon Monoxide Detector in your home. Is there a difference between the plug-ins or the battery operated alarm? Also, does a home only need one or should there be an alarm near all appliances?

Answer
same rules apply for a smoke detector, one on each level of the house, especially near sleeping areas. Plug in with a battery back up are a little better as people do not tend to remember to change batteries yearly, and a detector does not do you any good if it's dead.

Also if you are a smoker or there is smokers in your house, be aware that sometimes the CO from cigarettes can set up detectors

how to become a daycare in home?

carbon monoxide detectors california image

Kourtney E

i am located in southern california, los angeles county...
wondering what the steps are to run a daycare at home? and if there are any educational requirements? and or what would be the BEST way to do this and secure business?

Answer
I'm not in your state, but I am a licensed home daycare provider. What I had to do is contact the department of human & children services. They sent me a packet about what I had to do in order to become licensed, if I was still interested, I would (& did) send them back a form stating so. Then they sent me the entire application. When you apply to become licensed, there's a lot of paperwork & it's time consuming. It took around 3 months for everything to be done & go through. Everyone in the house has to get a physical & TB test, the house must be child proofed & be up to certain standards, such as fire & carbon monoxide detectors installed. All adults in the house must pass a background check & get fingerprinted. You have to turn in 3 references. You must have graduated high school, you'll have to get certified in CPR/First Aid, & you must attend 15hrs of child care training per year. The department of human services will inspect your home before giving you a license, if changes need to be made, you will have a certain time frame to get that done. Then they will do drop in visits 2-4 times per year. This is a secure business, but your income varies greatly from time to time. How much you make all depends on how many kids your watching, if they're full or part time, & so on. When you become licensed you are only allowed a certain number of kids in certain age groups, so there is a limit. If you have kids of your own, they will take up one of them spots - doesn't matter if they're in school during the day or not, your kids count. Most home daycares are allowed up to 8 kids, since I have 3 kids of my own (even though 1 is in school full time), that means I'm only allowed to have 5 kids. The hardest part of being a daycare provider is the parents. Make sure you have a contract & that you & the parents sign it, so that there is a clear understanding of what you charge, when it's due, vacation/holiday/sick policy, etc.

Can someone help me with smoke alarm placement?

lovestolau

I live in a very small, 5 room house. I have tried several smoke detectors over the years, and there seems to be no place I can put one that doesn't go off whenever I take a shower or cook. They are supposed to be placed a certain number of feet from heat sources such as kitchens or bathrooms, but there is no place in my house that is that far away. My kitchen is at one end of the house, and my bathroom a little past the middle. Even having the oven over a certain temperature (and yes, it is clean) makes it go off. I also have trouble with carbon monoxide detectors. Every time someone takes a shower, the gas alarm goes off. A family member wears a hearing aid, and the sound of the alarm is excruciating and makes the hearing aid buzz loudly. I presently do not have either installed because I can't spend my entire day turning them off. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
Talk to someone from your local deaf association. They might be able to get you the alarms for the deaf..they work like a strobe light and yes they will wake you up..there is different placement for them, so this route might work for you and for the family member whose hearing aid is not compatible with the alarms..but..please..till then put the batteries back in..you can take the batteries out when cooking or put a fan on to dissipate the heat, but please do not go to sleep without the protection of an alarm for the safety of you and your loved ones.

Why does my Nighthawk carbon monoxide detector keep chirping every so often and reading 248 after I reset it?

nighthawk carbon monoxide detector 888 image

Dragonlady

The last few days, the detector has chirped...does it for about an hour or less, every 30 seconds or so. Sometimes it stops for hours..even up to a day before it does it again. I've changed the battery twice. It came up low battery once...but was reading 0 the whole time the other times it happened. Then when I hit reset, it went to 888, then to 248 and once said 247. I don't understand this...makes me worry, yet it goes back to 0.

Answer
It suggests that there most likely is a malfunction if as you say that you've put new batteries in. It could also be an end of life warning (not yours, the carbon monoxide detectors'). If you've had the alarm for between 4-7 years this could be the case. People have had some problems with this particular model of carbon monoxide detector. It's probably best to contact the manufacturer directly, in this case Kidde, and if you have a valid warranty get them to send a new one asap. If not and your detector is in the end of life period it's probably better to buy a new one asap anyway. In the meantime it's better not to take any risks; make sure your house is well ventilated at all times.

How to keep a bird from getting sick?

carbon monoxide detector 7 years on - Carbon Monoxide Detector, CO2 Detector, Battery Operated Carbon ...
carbon monoxide detector 7 years image

Jack

I want to get a conure but I don't want him to get sick. Should I close all the air vents in his room? How often do they get sick? Thanks

Answer
Conures are known to be social and intelligent birds and they are highly appreciated as pets. In the wild, most species form flocks of 20 birds or more. If you keep a single bird, you have to give it a lot of attention and companionship since it is such a social creature. You should also give it toys, mirror etc to keep it active and prevent boredom in the cage. Conures are normally easy to tame and can be taught all sorts of tricks as long as you give them enough attention. Single birds are known to be especially keen on interacting with humans and can for instance learn how to say a few words in their peculiar high-pitches voice. A conure that does not receive any stimulation can grow sad and listless.

Conures wants to keep clean and you should give them opportunity to take a bath on a daily basis. It is important not to use deep water. Some specimens love to be sprayed with lukewarm water. After bathing or being sprayed, the bird will carefully preen its entire body and excrete oil to lubricate the feathers.

The recommended minimum cage size depends on how large and active your bird is, and how much time you let it spend outside the cage. The cage must be protected from draft. Include at least two perches; one up high and one near food, water and bath. Give your bird suitable things to climb and chew on in the cage; this way it will maintain its beak and nail in good condition. You can find various objects in the pet store, e.g. mineral blocks. It is also a good idea to add small natural branches from trees to allow gnawing.

Maintenance schedule
Each day: clean and replenish water and food dishes
Each week: clean perches and toys
Each year: clean and disinfect the entire cage

Newspaper needs to be changed every other day. If you use absorbent bedding instead, you only have to change it once a week.

Conures are generally healthy animals that rarely become ill, but it is important to follow the requirements above and any specific requirements of your species, e.g. when it comes to housing and feeding, if you want your conure to stay happy and healthy.

Signs of illness in conures
1.resting more often than normally, especially if the head is tucked under the wing or rump
2.apathy
3.sitting on the bottom of the cage more than usual
4.not making any sounds anymore
5.ruffled plumage
6.loss of appetite
7.weight loss
8.drinking more or less than normally
9.discharge from mouth and/or nostrils (like when human has a cold)
10.clouded eyes
11.the droppings become looser than normally
12.seem to have difficulty breathing
13.opening and closing its mouth in an unusual fashion
14.growths around the beak

If your bird starts plucking its feathers it is probably not physically ill, it is most likely bored and feels alone in the cage. It may also be bullied by other birds in the cage or feel unsafe in its environment

things that you can do and that will help prevent harm to your parrots.
â Keep doors and windows closed when your bird is out of the cage. (Warning birds have been know to chew holes in screens and have escaped that way).
â Before you allow your flighted bird out make sure they know their way around and supervise them at all times to prevent injury.
â Clean your house with bird friendly products such as vinegar and baking soda and invest in a steam mop, stick vacuum, steam cleaner, or hand held vacuum for clean ups.
â Clean your birdâs cage on a weekly basis and wipe down daily.
â Offer at least daily clean fresh water. Goldie gets fresh water twice a day.
â Install a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector.
â Check bedding and toys everytime you clean the cage (daily) for strings, frayed edges, holes, or any toy that appears broken, worn, or in the least bit hazardous. Bird can get themselves caught and strangled in a toy or bed.
â Secure items that can fall on playing or flying birds.
â Have a yearly vet wellness checkup.
â Offer your bird a bath as often as it seems to want one.
â Learn the signs of illness in a bird.
â Check your birdâs weight weekly and make note of changes.
â Make sure your bird is offered regular play time.
â If you have cats, dogs, or other parrots always supervise when your bird is out playing.
â Never use the self cleaning feature on an oven with the bird in the house.

Last but not least, diet. A balanced diet can ward off so many illnesses in our pet birds. Fresh pesticide free fruits and vegetables, sprouts, grains, nuts, cooked beans, and pellets with minimal seed...

My carbon monoxide detector keep going off?

kevin

So this morning I woke up and it started to beep. I tried to switch batteries and now it beeps once every twelve or so seconds.

Answer
Periodic beeping or chirping, rather than a continuous alarm, is indicative of a problem with the detector itself rather than a carbon monoxide problem. Assuming the battery you put in was good and properly connected, then it could be the detector has reached its end of life (they're only good for 5-7 years, depending on make and model).

Searching to buy a guard dog - what breed would be the best for me?

ArmywifeCF

Hello,
We are about to move to the new house, and we need to buy a dog to guard the property. So far I would like a German shepherd and my husband would like a Rottweiler but it is not a definite choice- maybe some other breed too. I have to have in count the following:
- Dog has to be strong enough to stop intruders from approaching the house (the whole property is well fenced)
- Has to be able to live outside in his own house (here temperatures never fall below 2-3 C )
- Should obey both myself and my husband (especially in the matter of allowing visitors to enter)
- We have a 5 yr old cat that lives in the house with us but should not be harmed if accidentally goes out
- We have no and do not plan children

Thanks
edit:dog has to live outside because we are home only nights and weekends, not because we don't want to interact-of course we will

Answer
If you can't house your lone dog inside with your family, you are not prepared to have a dog and should not have one. Dogs are pack animals and rely on the attention, affection and interaction they get from you. Unless you plan to have multiple dogs that will provide the attention and interaction a dog requires to each other, leaving a dog outside and alone is cruel and often results in behavioral problems like barking, digging and aggression. Since outdoor dogs bark so much, people tend to ignore them anyway. My neighbor had one that barked all the time, which did not endear him to the neighborhood. Nobody payed attention and things were stolen from the alley all the time. Someone even got past the dog and stole a motor scooter right out of his yard!

If you are just looking for a way to protect your home, there are plenty of other options. You can get a security system - these can now be fully integrated with motion sensors that will not pick up your cat, glass breakage detectors, fire and carbon monoxide detectors, remote monitoring, mobile panic buttons for police and medical, cameras, DVRs, etc. Mine even has wireless signal (so you can't cut it off by cutting my phone line). You or your husband is in the military, right? You guys must have guns around and know how to use them, or if he does and you don't, have him teach you and get you a 38 or a 9 - good man stoppers with not much recoil. If you can't stand the thought of a gun, and a high tech security system just isn't enough, get a panic room.

Even the cheapest security system is better security than an outdoor dog that feels unloved and abandoned. If you have a townhouse, the solution is simple - break in from the front yard. If you have a single fence for your whole house, often dogs that feel abandoned and alone will roll over on the owners for a piece of meat and a scratch behind the ears. A professional will generally case your house for a while, and may even befriend your outdoor dog while you are out. If your dog becomes aggressive due to the extended solitude, that is a liability for you. Dogs love to dig, and can make quick work of the dirt under a fence if they want to. Children and teens can often be cruel to outdoor dogs, provoking them further. If your outdoor dog escapes while you are out all day and attacks somebody (who is not going to admit they teased your dog for the past month), that is your liability. I could keep listing off reasons why you should never keep a dog outside its whole life, but I suggest you start with the articles below and then speak to some animal rescues about responsible dog ownership, then determine if you are willing to make room in your family home for one more or if a different security solution would be better for your family.

Answer
air density is 1.204g/L
carbon monoxide density is 1.145g/L
helium density is 0.179g/L
any gas that has lower density than air will rise

to answer your question, if its leak through a window and gone outside, it will not go upstairs. if the house is sealed, it will filled up downstairs first, then upstairs. it will take a long time to fill up the whole house because the density is very close to air density.

Could there be carbon monoxide in my house?

RiRi

I was barbecuing earlier today on my front porch. The grill was about 3 - 5 feet away from my windows and door. My windows weren't open but my door was with the screen door closed. Was I too close? Could the gas have seeped inside of my house at all? Thanks.

Answer
Air your house out. If you have a basement turn a fan on down there and circulate the air. AND get one of those detectors, one for upstairs and another for downstairs. Then if it goes off, move the barbecue.

I had the same problem in a fifth wheel a few years ago using hair spray in the bathroom , the technician that came over to check the system told me that those detector are very sensitive and that any kind of strong fumes or chemical mist in the air will in fact set them off , my bathroom was adjacent to my bedroom and closing the door between the two rooms solved the problem for me.

can vapor from isopropyl alcohol set off a carbon monoxide detector?

clint v

i was cleaning with the alcohol, about 6 ft from the detector 20 min later it started to chirp. when i was done i cleaned up, reset the detector and it stopped chirping

Answer
I was going to say "no way" but started digging. found a carbon monoxide detector manual on line that sates it is very sensitive to CO and will detect Acetone, Alcohol, Butane and Gasoline. Very interesting. Here's the link:

So I guess the answer is Yes.

For ages and ages now we've smelled gas every now and then - we had Transco out who couldnt detect any leaks, but it seems that various times the flue, high up on the outside wall of our house must kick out has because we can smell it.
WE have got a 4 year old combi boiler.
we have got a carbon monoxide detector in the room for safety, but its frustrating..!

is it normal surely we shouldnt be smelling gas though..

its been like this for months

What can I do about a smoke detector than uses batteries very frequently.?

Pikesville

Both ULI and Kidde detectors installed in my house seem to be eating batteries . The ULI detector was manufactured in 2009. The Kidde one in 2010. ULI says it is warranted for 5 years, Kidde for 10 years. Kidde one has suddenly been false alarming carbon monoxide detected when hard wired. Could the hard wiring need to be replaced? My house was built in 1986. Detectors have been replaced several times over the years. The combo carbon monoxide/smoke detectors seem to have more false alarms and are eating up 9 V back up batteries. Help!

Answer
If the voltage is wrong it could be killing the alarms and they are constantly on the battery hence the reason they seem to go through batteries and false alarm.

You could have AC detectors and your home smoke detector circuit is DC (not good).

You could have DC detectors and the power on the line is AC(not good).

Or the voltage could be wrong it may be 120v ac and the detectors are 24vac. (not good)

Sounds to me like it is time to break out the volt meter and do some sleuthing and them go get the right detectors or rewire the detector power circuit in your home.
