Should I take a carbon monoxide detector on vacation with me?

Answer
Most hotels have a carbon monoxide detector build in the room already.

If you fear for your safety, and it is a priority to you, then bring one if it makes you feel better.

Should I call the fire dept?

lops

My carbon monoxide detector has been going off intermittently for about an hour. I called my landlord and she said they had someone come and check it recently and it's a faulty detector, so that made me feel a little better. However, TWO carbon monoxide detectors are now going off. Do I need to call the fire department? If they tell me leave, I have nowhere to go and no money for a hotel. What do I do?

Answer
Don't listen to your landlord. If it was faulty it should have been replaced immediately. This isn't something to play around with. If you go to sleep you might not wake up. Call the fire department and they can come out and and check the CO2 levels with a handheld device.

How can you tell if someone is smoking ?

carbon monoxide detectors in schools on December 2004 Juniper Berry Magazine - JuniperCivic.com
carbon monoxide detectors in schools image
Q. How do you know if someone is smoking ? Is their anything in their appearance where you might be able to guess ? Or any noticable symptoms ? Or is their a way to catch them out ?

Answer
You can ask the suspected smoker directly, "do you smoke". But once they say they don't smoke and they lie about it, they will never volunteer that information,"

Look for Nicotine stains on fingers, Yellowish stains on teeth, (can also be coffee tea etc.). Withdrawl symptoms including irritation, anger, depression, headaches, concentration problems, fatigue, constipation, restlessness, insomnia, dizziness, anxiety. The smokers clothing, room, and car will smell like cigarettes or a dirty ashtray.

Most "addicted" smokers will require a cigarette after their body has been deprived of nicotine (after sleeping). Watch behavior in the morning see if there is signs of nicotine withdrawls. If the smoker is trying to conceal the fact that they are smoking there will be a need to "be alone" during this time.

I don't know if this will help but, I drive to Southern California 3 times a year, and I've noticed that I usually go through an entire pack of cigarettes to complete a six hour drive. If there is a trip in your near future and the suspected smoker is going, (this will depend on the level of addiction in the suspected smoker) you should see some signs of nicotine withdrawls, unless the suspected smoker is wearing a nicotine patch or using some sort of nicotine replacement device (gum or lozenges).

If you're unable to catch 'em in the act there will also be noticeable changes to behavior after the smoker has satisfied their need for nicotine. Most smokers feed the nicotine addiction to help themselves relax or calm down when stressed. smoking also stimulates and increases concentration.

There is also information about a device available to hospitals for detecting carbon monoxide in the blood: http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSN2220914720071023

There are also "STEALTH" smoking detectors available that have been put to use in schools which detect the ultraviolet light present in the flame of a cigarette, lighter, or match: http://www.catchasmoker.com/

and finally...

A short questionnaire coupled with a urine test in the pediatrician's office can spot teen smokers: http://preventdisease.com/news/articles/doctors_can_catch_teen_smokers.shtml

I'm moving into a rental house that has a big rectangular metal space heater. It has to be plugged in but it's fueled by propane. That kinda baffles me, but whatever, I've always had CH/AC. My question is what do I need to know about this thing? All I know so far is that I'll need a carbon monoxide detector which the re-modelers are already installing.

Answer
A lot of space heaters do not require electricity to operate, but they have blower fans as an option to help circulate the heat.

Check the rating plate on the heater. It should state the minimum clearances to be maintained from combustibles etc.

These type of heaters work quite well for heating an open area. You wont get a lot of benefit from it in rooms off of the main room, but they work pretty well...They are PERFECTLY SAFE if they are maintained and serviced properly. If they weren't they wouldn't be allowed in homes.

Do you recommend getting a carbon monoxide detector hard-wired in to home or buy an outlet detector?

HAPPY_DAYZ

I am buying a new home, and was wondering about the pro's and con's of having a carbon monoxide dectector hard wired into my homes (this is very costly)

-OR-

Should i buy a device that plugs into an outlet that can monitor carbon monoxide?

What do you suggest ?
What do you use in your homes?

Thanks!

Answer
Always good to have a hard wired system through out the house. But Kiddie makes a great detector that is battery operated and will do the job as good as any hard wired system.Just remember in October to change the batteries whether you need to or not it is good practice.October is fire prevention month so do this and you will be safe.

first hands down answer. first make sure the carbon tester is not at fault then make sure there is a second detector on the property.then i would have an expert inspect the whole furnace from top to bottom for any leaks of any kind.

I have a logic 4 alarm.in my house its never been switched on but all night its been letting out beeps ?

Sara

I dnt no how to stop it

Answer
Battery or batteries must have been getting old even with it not switched on. I betcha it would stop beeping if you replaced the battery or batteries. If you care about your sleep, replace the batteries. Otherwise, it's going to wake you up.

I have both smoke detector & carbon monoxide detector that came with the rental house. Had to replace batteries in one in the middle of the night. The other started beeping off & on a few months later. Tester showed batteries were okay, but still it kept beeping off & on. Slept with windows open & was quite fearful due to warnings all over detector that I should leave house & so on. Finally, figured out how to open it & went ahead & replaced batteries. It's fine now with no more beeping. That gives me the general rule of thumb. If it beeps & there's no fire, replace batteries. If it's a carbon monoxide detector, you can leave the house & call the fire dept. to check it out like the box says, or you can gamble on it & open the windows & run the ceiling fans in the dead of winter in case it's really carbon monoxide. If no more beeps, forget it. It's fine.

What to do with security system?

carbon monoxide detectors for sale on Motorhomes For Sale By Owners - RV Classifieds
carbon monoxide detectors for sale image

Ben F

My condo is pre-wired for security monitoring (like ADT, brinks), but the service isn't actually included in the association fees (meaning I'd have to pay for it myself).

What else can I do with the system? I'd like to be able to get some level of security out of the system. Is there a free service I could use? Or can I buy something that would automatically do the 911 call if the alarm goes off?

Answer
If the place is pre-wired installing an alarm system is generally less expensive. If you call around some companies are willing to install "local" alarm systems (Meaning not monitored, only a siren will sound). This is not something I would recommend however it is can be an option if you are on a budget. Just be prepared to pay a little more for the installation as alarm companies make money from the re-curring revenues of monitoring.

As for the system calling 911 on it's own. This is no longer an option in any location I know of. The reason being, police are busy enough that dealing with nuisance false alarms is too much for them to handle without passing the costs on via increased taxes. Hence the need for third party monitoring stations.

I have written a number of articles on home protection, both electronic and otherwise. Please feel free to check them out on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. Protection 101 and False alarms may be of particular interest to you. There are also some others in the archive, which involve abit of reading.

Obviously, being in the security alarm industry I would recommend a monitored security system. First of all you will get a discount on your home insurance, secondly, if something does happen, at least you can be comfortable in knowing your home is secure when you unlock the front door. You can also add life safety detectors such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors which will more than pay for themselves in the added piece of mind. I know this may sound like ad-speak, but as you are probably not in my service area, I have nothing to gain by this recommendation.

In addition, your place is pre-wired, if a sales person comes in there trying to sell you a wireless system saying the technology is "superior" it is a good sign to send them on their way back to the toy company.

What is the best alarm system for my house?

Kingston's

Answer
Being in the industry and NOT making money off this advice, my personal opinion might be slightly different than that of Jon. I do share some of his opinions but although simple noise only alarms are effective at warding off most, I have been to houses where entire panels have been ripped off the wall and nobody knew about it until they got home. Nothing worse than walking into a house with someone unexpected in it.

All that aside, most crackheads will avoid houses with stickers. The other advantages of monitored systems are insurance discounts, monitored smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

As for what security system is best for your home, first of all I would say stay away from wireless. Although many sales people will tell you wireless security systems are superior to hardwire, they are just playing the numbers game. Wireless is easier and faster to install, therefor they can pay less money in labour and still get the monitoring account. Really a wine loose situation to their benefit. http://ezinearticles.com/?Wireless-Security-Systems---The-True-Cost&id=562150
Or there is more in the archive on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca

The system you choose should really be customized around what you feel is important. The larger your home, the more zones and devices you need. A zone is an input on the panel which gets connected to a detection device (Which is basically a switch) Detection devices can be door contacts, motion detector, glassbreak sensor, smoke detectors etc. There is more info again on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca Articles of particular interest would be protection 101 and False alarm info. There is also some tips and advice on some non-electronic methods to make your home less desirable to the crackhead element.

Last bit of advice, try to find a local company with a proven track record. Companies listed as "authorized dealers" typically sell their monitoring accounts to the head company usually leaving you with a poor level of service.

Good Luck

My mum keeps saying she is getting a whiff of gas. She said she got it when she was in the bath which was about 8 hours ago.
I can't smell it but since she mentioned it my nose is tingling. Out boiler has been going funny over these few weeks shutting itself off.
In my bedroom by the boiler we have a carbon monoxide detector. Would it detect a gas leak?

Answer
No unless it says on it that it is a multi gas detector. Most carbon monoxide detectors only detect carbon monoxide. There are some high end ones that detect other gases but these are well marked.

Will a carbon monoxide detector detect a gas leak in the house?

Lucy Locke

I notice a faint smell of gas in the house. Will a carbon monoxide detector register a gas leak?

Answer
No, carbon monoxide and natural gas are two different things. Carbon monoxide is produced when a hydrocarbon fuel is not combusted completely. Natural gas is about 96% methane with a small amount of ethane mixed in. It is a colorless and odorless gas. An odorant is added to it to give a garlic like smell to it so you can detect leakage. If you suspect a natural gas leak you should have a qualified service technician come in and perform a leak test. It is fairly simple to do and will quite possibly save your life or home. Natural gas is lighter than air and will rise. It can accumulate in pockets beneath floors or ceilings. All it needs then is a spark or other source of ignition. Often times a pilot light can be blown out and allow small amounts of natural gas to build up. Over a few hours a large amount of the gas can be released. Do not take this matter lightly, it can be extremely dangerous if it is not taken care of.

I rent a small lock out basement in Colorado and recently found out my boiler had been releasing carbon monoxide, and fire, thankfully it turned itself off
. I have 2 year old daughter and my husband as well should we get checked out by a doctor? Should we take legal action against my landlord? State law is that a landlord has to provide a CO detector he only provided smoke detector. What do I do someone please help Im very confused and scared.

Answer
I would buy a small detector to keep in your home from now on, notify the landlord in writing of the incident, and request that they provide a CO detector. The landlord must respond within a certain amount of time according to your state and city laws.

They may ignore you or attempt to evict you on some other grounds so that's why you should buy a CO detector yourself. It's never a good idea to mix it up with a landlord unless you have money to move and are willing to do so. Write the letter immediately. You have a responsibility as a tenant to notify the landlord of such a situation even if you are afraid of retaliation. It shows a judge that you did the right thing.

No matter what the landlord does you have the right to sue in small claims court for the cost of any medical bills and damages you think you may be entitled to. If it is not well-documented and if the treating physician does not specifically state that you were suffering from CO most likely from the apartment, then your case will be dismissed for lack of evidence.

Additionally, you should seek out your local Landlord - Tenant Association for assistance and advice.

How to test a carbon monoxide detector?

carbon monoxide detectors how they work image

Logic316

Is there any way to make sure a carbon monoxide detector is actually working? I know you can push the button on it, but that only tests the battery, not the CO sensor itself. I have an oil burner and I've actually placed the CO detector *inside* my chimney where it got the full blast of the exhaust and temporarily turned up the fumes by making my burner run too rich. I can't be certain, but this should have produced lots of CO and the detector never went off. Any suggestions?

Answer
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels, including coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas.

Take your detector to your local fire station they know how to test them.

I have a Nighthawk carbon monoxide detector and what is a number to know so that i know it's dangerous and should get out? I know it goes off when theres carbon monoxide in the air but i wanna know the number just incase. And I just tested it to and it said 214 is that bad?

Answer
The nice thing about Nighthawk is that they have a digital readout of the CO level so that you can monitor it even if the CO level isn't high enough to trigger the alarm. Under normal circumstances, the display should always read 0. Now, there are things that could cause the reading to temporarily rise, like cooking with a gas stove or oven. But, after you are done cooking, the level should drop. If your detector is reading anything but 0 all the time, you need to find the source and have the problem corrected. I would normally red flag anything over 9 or 10 ppm. Although that is no where near lethal levels, it still indicates a problem. Long term exposure to low levels of CO is not good for you.

i aired the house out an d reset the alarm. it has not gone off again. will it go off again i8f the CO level gets too high?

Answer
CO detectors usually have a five year life expectancy. Over time they can become less accurate and affected by temperature and humidity swings. Even low levels of carbon monoxide can be dangerous for your family so don't take the alarm lightly. Take the time to find out why the alarm went off and have the issue resolved. Detectors usually trigger above 70 parts per million after 15 minutes. Once the concentration of CO goes down, the alarm will reset and monitor the air for future conditions.

Heres the deal,i ate somthing that gave me horendous gas and i kept popping them off and every so often the monoxide detector kept going off and we couldnt figure out why. My wife jokingly said it was from my gas and it got me to thinking maybe it was. I pulled the detector off the wall and popped on directly into it and sure enough it went off. Come to find out this detector could sense methane gas ,thus the reason it kept going off. Try it sometime ,it really works.

Has anyone had a problem with carbon monoxide detectors going off after a keg party. Happened twice to me?

This happened to one of my friends as well. We were both just using standard air pressure taps...no CO2 or other compressed gas. Both kegs were in relatively confined basements. I can't really come up with a reason for it. Also, there was no smoking inside at either party.

I am interested in a valid procedure for testing the Carbon Monoxide detector element in a typical 120v plug-in CO Alarm device. My question is with respect to the CO detector itself not the push button test feature most units have. This only checks the electrical operation of the device not it's ability to detect the gas

Answer
if it is a plug-in unit get an extension cord and hold it up to your car muffler with your car running.

What is this loud beep in the house?Fire Alarm?

OWL

Every about five minutes a loud quick beep hurt my ears,I think I once heard that it might be the fire alarms low on battery can it be this? I heard it in many other houses too.like my Grampa's House and friend's houses. What can this be?It's driving me NUTS!

Answer
READ EVERY WORD FIRST, ALL OF THEM, PLEASE!!!!
Well that's an easy one, I am assuming you are young since you reference Grandpa. Note the beep has to be from something electronic Possible sources: Burglar Alarm company backup battery to the main system is weak, the remotely located wireless window/door sensors have batteries that when dead make the Alarm console beep.

A smoke detector is likely. I have some that mount directly to the wall and some to a bracket that is mounted and you turn the "front" of the detector CCW or CW to remove from the bracket. You need to know if the smoke/fire alarm is a battery unit (CLUE: IF YOU CAN TAKE IT OFF WHERE ITS MOUNTED AND IF IT HAS NO WIRE INTO THE WALL/CEILING ITS BATTERY, NOW TURN IT OVER TO THE "WALL SIDE", MAYBE THERE IS A VISIBLE 9V BATTERY COMPARMENT SPOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU), if not it might be a open the cover unit, so, open the cover by looking, AND THEN LOOKING AGAIN, you might have to pry a "tab" or unscrew a screw before opening, when you see the 9v battery you will be half done, (if YOU DON'T ABSOLUTELY KNOW WHAT A 9V BATTERY LOOKS LIKE STOP SEE TEST BUTTON BELOW). PLEASE don't mess with the "120" volt smoke detector, call the company if it's the "beeper" [all non battery smoke detectors may not be "120" volt but they may be 12-24 volt AC or DC so they still might be dangerous] (I say that more for those who might nitpick me).

If it really beeps every five minutes it wont hurt to pull the 9volt battery and wait 7 minutes. TEST SECTION: If you can't wait, be brave, re-read above and extract the battery, put the 9v battery to your tongue, if it mildly tingles it's a dead battery, if it smarts put it back in and wait the "5" minutes. NOTE YOU CAN'T DIE FROM THIS EXCEPT MAYBE IF YOU HAVE A PACEMAKER OR BUILT-IN HEART DEFIBRILLATOR SO THOSE FOLKS DON'T "TONGUE" IT.

Or best of all, get a volt meter from an electronics pal. 9 volts minus 1.8=7.2 volts = battery no good (if the battery is low by 20% its dead, this even applies with 6 volt, 1.5volt etc.( -20% is my guide for alkaline batteries),

Also if you are afraid just press the TEST BUTTON, on the smoke detector, if it has one, buy a new one if it doesn't have a test button, its too old or the owner was too frugal. [IF IT WONT SOUND OFF UNDER TEST ITS DEAD, IF IT DOES SOUND THEN YOU CAN NOW KNOW IF ITS "YOUR BEEP"] Now identify if its a 9v battery by taking it gently off its mount or bracket mount also see above again. See the test section if you feel braver.

If you succeed in removal AND REPLACE THE 9V note that I put all my detectors on a wall AS CLOSE to the ceiling on a 3-4 inch bread twist tie or better "wire" to a screw or thumb tack [ yes it looks fine if you do it right] for easy removal of batteries and no loss of sensitivity. Generally smoke rises driven by the heat, so the closer to the ceiling the better.
(this wire mount idea is at your discretion, I'm sure some fire guy is gonna disagree but in my experience of an actual house fire in 1987 with the detectors mounted as such, they saved my sleeping wife and cat!)

Check for a carbon monoxide detector and again make sure its not "120" volt, press the test button. A UPS on your computer with a near dead battery makes beeps. A medical device for "Gramps" may be at fault. a cell phone or cordless home phone beeps when near dead. A microwave or new fridge with the door open can beep. An AC alarm clock can beep when its 9volt battery gets weak.. Get the common thread?

If after all that you can't isolate it, invite some other young folks over for sodas, [statistically better at hearing high pitched beeps] put the battery back in the smoke detector and have the young'uns stand at different parts around the seeming sound area to pinpoint the beep. Keep in mind that some beeps are so foxy that they are like a ventriloquist and "throw their voices" so move around like musical chairs till every one agrees. Need I say more?? Good Luck! WHEW

I have a gas heater in my very small bedroom (my room is only 12x12x 8 feet), and have been trying to put carbon monoxide alarm there. But every time I put and leave the alarm for only 5 minutes in the room, the alarm sounds. I believe it sounds because the alarm is less than 15 feet from the gas heater.

Is there anybody who has idea how to solve this problem? Where and how am I supposed to put the alarm to detect carbonmonoxide in my small bedroom? Thanks a lot.

Answer
You should get your room tested by a professional for carbon monoxide. The alarm is designed to detect the presence of CO (carbon monoxide) and it's detecting it. Since you're living in the same area the alarm is in, you're being exposed to that CO. Don't mess around - many, many people have died in their sleep from CO poisoning.

Some causes of CO generation are caused by the exhaust gasses no being vented properly (blocked chimney), or blocked source of fresh air. Both these situations can kill you. Call a certified heating and cooling guy. Do you really trust life and death questions to anonymous people who have no qualifications to answer those types of questions?

Answer
That's quite a list of symptoms, maybe you have a urinary tract infection plus something else. While you are waiting for the test results, drink cranberry juice and eat yogurt or some form of probiotics.

I'm sure you would benefit from using probiotics (probiotics are in yogurt). Especially since you have had the diarrhea and urinary tract symptoms.

Also, do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home? If you don't, you should get one to rule out that possibility.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms

Exposure to carbon monoxide is most commonly accompanied by the following symptoms:

Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Flu-like symptoms, fatigue
Shortness of breath on exertion
Impaired judgment
Chest pain
Confusion
Depression
Hallucinations
Agitation
Vomiting
Abdominal pain
Drowsiness
Visual changes
Fainting
Seizure
Memory and walking problems

â¶â¶If you have fever, you need to tell your doctor to check for a urinary tract infection. Also, I don' know how old you are but some young men can get prostate infections It's called Prostatitis and sometimes gets confused with urinary tract infections.

Firemen came to my house because the carbon monoxide detector was beeping and they said there was a leve of 5. Is this alright to sleep in if I have all windows in my room open? The firemen didn't say I should leave but I need a final opinion of what to do

Answer
If the firemen didn't say you should leave then it's probably not high enough for concern. After all, they've been trained in that field of expertise.

My carbon monoxide detector is going off?

mebelchert

My carbon monoxide detector keeps going off. I had the house tested for carbon monoxide and there wasn't any. I moved the detector outside and it is still beeping. Could it be defective?

Answer
How old is it. I've never had much luck with them lasting very long.

What should I do. I told my mom carbon monoxide could kill its but she kinda doesn't care.

Answer
Each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. More than 20,000 will visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning.

If you hear your carbon monoxide detector beeping, most experts would recommend that you immediately call emergency services and get out of your home.

Ignoring carbon monoxide detectors can be dangerous. CO is an odorless and colorless gas, which is why it is often referred to as the "silent killer." When this alarm sounds (intermittent beeps) it means this gas has been leaking unbeknownst to you and has reached a dangerous level.

What do you do when the alarm (intermittent beeping) goes off? The first thing to do, DO NOT ignore the beeping of the alarm. Should you or others in your household experience any of the following symptoms indicating the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, or confusion, you must get to a hospital or call 9-1-1 immediately. And, DO NOT re-enter the home until emergency services has indicated it is safe to return.

On the other hand, if no one is showing signs or symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, go ahead and open all windows to get air ventilation. Next, turn off any appliances such as your gas-fired furnace or a running generator. After the home has gotten ventilation, reset the carbon monoxide detectors. If the detectors do not sound again, call a qualified technician to inspect and repair any problem. Should the alarm sound a second time (and no one is showing signs of CO poisoning, vent the home and call your local fire department. Emergency personnel will advise you when it is safe to return home.

My Carbon Monoxide Detector went off. What does it mean?

Well, about 8 or so hours ago my detector went off. I at first thought it was a fire alarm but when I went to check what it was and it was the carbon monoxide. It beeped 4 times then stopped and kept on repeating itself until i took the batteries out. I don't know if I actually have carbon monoxide in my house. I have been feeling lightheaded and dizzy since then so im worried. I have left my room window open most of the day but when i close it, i feel dizzy again. Please suggest what i should do because i might fall asleep soon.

Answer
Lol. You are so worried and light headed but you might just fall asleep soon anyway? Hey, my room is on fire - is that dangerous? When I touch it I get burned, but I think I will just go ahead and snuggle up to some oily rags and fall asleep anyway! Great post, pretty funny!

Exhaust leak in my 1997 ford escort.. How do i fix it ? i belive its coming from my catalytic converter?

carbon monoxide detector defective image

I can not find any pictures online to see if it is my c.c .. it looks like a weaved basket texture almost. I would like to know if anyone knows what this is and/ or how to fix it without paying a million dollars for a new one!!!!???!!!
Could it possibly be the resonator?? i tried finding a diagram of what it looks like and nothing looks like it.

Answer
To find the leak, make a soapy solution and spray it on the connections along the exhaust pipe. Leaks will show up by making bubbles. Auto parts stores sell adhesive tape to be a band aid fix. Best fix is remove and replace defective parts. Cannot stress enough how dangerous exhaust leaks are. Warm carbon monoxide filters up into the car's interior. Odorless, colorless, impossible to detect without a smoke detector made for monoxide. Deadly, especially in winter when we have the windows closed. Could also put the driver to sleep and cause accident that way.

help! my smoke alarm keeps going off, there is no smoke around and i tried changing the battery?

kim h

this isnt the first time it has happened but i just moved into a new apt in may and several times my smoke alarm in my room goes off. usually i just change the battery and it stops but i tried that already and it is still continuously going off. help! what do i do??? i dont want to have to wait until the morning to call maintanenece!

Answer
You may have a alarm that also detects poisionious gasses such as carbon monoxide etcetera..a gas you cannot smell..not all alrms just work on smoke detecting alone but also hazordous vapors..I would have someone check that out..it could be deadly..tyou could have a defective alarm..but I would see if this is a dual purpose alarm first...carbon monoxide can overcome you and family in the sleep mode without never knowing it..The fire department will usuall bring a detector in your apartment and check it for free..
