Disconnecting a smoke/fire alarm?

carbon monoxide detector 9v on Kidde 9v Battery Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm | QVS Electrical ...
carbon monoxide detector 9v image
Q. I live in an apartment complex, and the smoke alarm in the unit keeps chirping, it's the kind that can twist off, but it hangs from the wires. There's no batteries in site for me to remove, so i'm assuming it's hardwired? I've contacted the office here, and they said I would have to wait until Monday evening to get it looked at. I've been listening to it all weekend, i'm going nuts.. I won't be able to stand 1 more night and entire day. Please help!

Answer
Very few smoke dectors are not abttery back up operated.

They are necessary for power outages, or if your electricity gets disconnected from a tripped circuit breaker, your elcetrical power lines get cut, etc...

I would go to the manufacturer's web site to see how to replacxe the battery if possible.

Most smoke detectors are hardwired for 2 reasons : For A/C power, and if one goes off it triggers the rest of the detectors to go off.

The hard wiring usually is to a plug that fits in the smoke detector outlet.

All smoke and carbon monoxide detectors I have owned or hooked up use 9v batteries.

It is hard to find fresh ones. Even brand new ones that ibought where to weka, that the smoke detector beeped almost immediately.

I got a Ten Year guarenteed smoke detector battery. It cost about $8, and got it at Menards. It is little ask for the peace of the smoke dectector's constant beeping, and possibly saving you from a deadly fire.

That way they do not need being replaced every year like or twice a year like the fire departments like to say when you change the clock in the spring and the fall for day light savings time.

Plus if they do not last 10 years there replaced for free!

Smoke alarm beeping every six minutes - what can I do?

Q. Yesterday evening my smoke alarm started beeping every minute - I then put in a new 9V battery which seemed to do the trick. However, today in the morning the alarm went off, then again peace, and now it's beeping every six minutes. Please, tell me what I should do, this damn thing is directly next to my bedroom! As far as I can tell the battery has to be for backup only (since it's even beeping with the battery out) but it seems to be glued and/or screwed to the ceiling, so I don't know how easy it would be to take it off. Also, what voltage would it use - dangerous to cut the cables if I can find them? Any help much appreciated!!!

Answer
Some smoke detectors are hard-wired into a home's electricity. They may even be wired where if one detects a problem they all go off. Since it is too warm for the furnace to be on the smoke detector should not be reacting to carbon monoxide. You would have a headache, and be tired and listless if there were carbon monoxide.

Some smoke detectors have a reset button that must be pressed after the battery is replaced before the beeping will stop. Below are some links that may provide help, and you can also "search" your question. Different search engines often bring up completely different sites.

its for a project on the khmer rouge genocide.
so what s a good song for that topic? nothing country please or about people breaking up and blahblah. just something really sweet about people missing others or something?

there's this one but it's not *really* sad and the others might not *sound* that sad but they are

Azure Ray - November

So I'm waiting for this test to end
So these lighter days can soon begin
I'll be alone but maybe more carefree
Like a kite that floats so effortlessly
I was afraid to be alone
Now I'm scared thats how I'd like to be
All these faces none the same
How can there be so many personalities
So many lifeless empty hands
So many hearts in great demand
And now my sorrow seems so far away
Until I'm taken by these bolts of pain
But I turn them off and tuck them away
'till these rainy days that make them stay
And then I'll cry so hard to these sad songs
And the words still ring, once here now gone
And they echo through my head everyday
And I dont think they'll ever go away
Just like thinking of your childhood home
But we cant go back we're on our own
Oh,
But i'm about to give this one more shot
And find it in myself
I'll find it in myself
So were speeding towards that time of year
To the day that marks that you're not here
And i think I'll want to be alone
So please understand if I dont answer the phone
I'll just sit and stare at my deep blue walls
Until I can see nothing at all
Only particles some fast some slow
All my eyes can see is all I know
Ohh..
But I'm about to give this one more shot
And find it in myself
I'll find it in myself

The Cranberries - Zombie

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,

What to check when whole family gets headaches?

carbon monoxide detectors when to replace on ... Forward & Replace Your Smoke Alarm/Carbon Monoxide Detector Batteries
carbon monoxide detectors when to replace image

kjml2003

We are all getting headaches and I didnt think of something in the home until my youngest one started complaining last week. We have several combo fire/carbon monoxide detectors in the house. I have replaced all batteries to be sure they are working properly. The alarm is not going off (other then when i put the batteries in and also when i test it) so i am assuming its not carbon monoxide. We live in a duplex and have one family attached to us. What else can I check and how? Thanks!

Answer
a few things come to mind....

LIGHTING: Do you use CFL - compact fluorescent lights? some say these can cause headaches. simple enough to check (do you have these in every room?). A related cause could be insufficient lighting (if the lights aren't bright enough this will cause eyestrain and headaches).

RADON GAS - although usually these symptoms are respiratory - I've heard some may complain with other symptoms (though unproven). I don't know where you live, but remember that this is a concern in some places in the South.

MOLD - while there are many symptoms for mold, headaches are one of them. Usually, it is not the ONLY symptom for toxic mold.

I don't want to scare you... these may not be the cause. Just thought I'd list what it POSSIBLY could be.

Hope you find what ails your family.

Is it possible to not show signs of carbon monoxide posioning?

jadehope

my carbon monoxide detector keeps beeping and on the instructions it said it beeps in a specific pattern if needs to be replaced. my fiancée took it out of the wall and it beeped in all sorts of other patterns. we plugged it back in and it isn't beeping. so is it not working and there is carbon monoxide or is it fine and I'm just over reacting? none of the dogs or my fiancée and I have any symptoms of poisoning. what should we do?

Answer
It sounds to me like the detector simply needed to be reset for some reason.
Hemoglobin, the part of the blood that carries oxygen from the lungs to the cells of the body, has about 5 times the affinity for carbon monoxide as it does for oxygen. That means that, in the prescience of CO, hemoglobin will pick it up and hold onto it to the exclusion of oxygen. Co poisoning results when the blood no longer carries oxygen only CO.
symptoms of CO poisoning are, Severe headache, nausea, lethargy, and a ruddy or bright pink complexion. Hemoglobin turns bright read in the presence of oxygen and even brighter red in the presence of CO

Two days ago we were awaking to our carbon monoxide alarm going off... left the apartment and call 911 like directed. The fire dept walking to the apart complex was getting a rating as they were walking in the open hallway. The fire department there 3 levels of carbon monoxide(dangerous, moderate, low)... my apartment was close to dangerous but was high moderate. My apartment is on the 3 floor and the second floor had a mid dangerous level and the first had high dangerous level of co2.
After the fire dept narrow'd the issue down to our laundry room our apt complex gas was turned off for now 2 days i like to add... and my apartment's AC is not working and KC is having temps all the way up in the high 90 degree temps... but thats another story...
I called a little ago to my apartment manager to find out about our hot water and gas and AC issue and stated that we had a gas leak and that carbon monoxide was false
My question is that can my carbon monoxide go off for a gas leak?

Answer
From:
http://www.okaloosagas.com/residentialServices/carbon_monoxide.cfm

"Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is very toxic, because it combines with the body's blood and prevents it from absorbing oxygen. Carbon monoxide results from the incomplete combustion of fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, heating oil, propane, diesel fuel, natural gas, wood and coal. The risk of CO accumulation is greater with poorly ventilated areas. Vents, equipment and chimneys that are not properly installed or maintained are the primary cause of carbon monoxide, even when operating properly. For this reason a car engine or other type of internal combustion engine should never be operated in an enclosed area, such as a garage.

A person exposed to carbon monoxide may complain of dizziness, headache, nausea, sleepiness, fatigue and flu-like or similar symptoms. In extreme cases, carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal. If you suspect high levels of CO in your home, contact us immediately at (850)729-4700 for a CO test then get your family out of the house and seek medical attention, if necessary."

If I were you, I'd get out of that apartment. Try to find a detached duplex.

Your experience is exactly why I don't like apartment living. We never know what is going on in the rest of the building.

Can someone help me with smoke alarm placement?

carbon monoxide detectors for the deaf image

lovestolau

I live in a very small, 5 room house. I have tried several smoke detectors over the years, and there seems to be no place I can put one that doesn't go off whenever I take a shower or cook. They are supposed to be placed a certain number of feet from heat sources such as kitchens or bathrooms, but there is no place in my house that is that far away. My kitchen is at one end of the house, and my bathroom a little past the middle. Even having the oven over a certain temperature (and yes, it is clean) makes it go off. I also have trouble with carbon monoxide detectors. Every time someone takes a shower, the gas alarm goes off. A family member wears a hearing aid, and the sound of the alarm is excruciating and makes the hearing aid buzz loudly. I presently do not have either installed because I can't spend my entire day turning them off. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
Talk to someone from your local deaf association. They might be able to get you the alarms for the deaf..they work like a strobe light and yes they will wake you up..there is different placement for them, so this route might work for you and for the family member whose hearing aid is not compatible with the alarms..but..please..till then put the batteries back in..you can take the batteries out when cooking or put a fan on to dissipate the heat, but please do not go to sleep without the protection of an alarm for the safety of you and your loved ones.

my cardonmonoxide detector wont %#^%&%&^ shut up!!!!!!!?

Lulu

there is no effing carbon monoxide in my house and the stupid thing wont shut up even when we put a fan to it it detects gas.

how do i shut it up i swear im going to be deaf by the time im done with it.

i have unplugged it i have put it outside i have put it in the basement fanned it.....

please help!!

Answer
If it's unplugged the device will still work and a cautionary beep is emitted to let you know your battery is dying.

Take the 9 volt out of the back and replace it. If that doesn't work maybe the censor in the actual device is defective.

As a cautionary step I would take it outside and attach an extension cord to it. If it's detecting extreme levels of carbon monoxide outside, you'll know it's faulty and should just replace the entire unit.

Is this necessary or is my dad just an extremist?

Austin

So it's like 60 degrees outside right now. Our furnace doesn't work and my dad would rather spend money on kerosene than getting that fixed. The house had a slight chill, my dad cranks up the kerosene heater. No problem, I understand. Now according to the thermostat, it's now 82 degrees in the house, no lie. We live in a single wide trailer and my dad refuses to ventilate by cracking a window so the heat (plus carbon monoxide) builds up fast. If I say something about it being too damn hot, he goes ballistic. What's your opinion on this? And by the way, can you really get carbon monoxide poisoning like this?

Answer
Well if you are concerned about carbon monoxide, go outside and or try to reason with your father and try to reach a compromise. You can listen to him go ballistic and eventually calm down and or die when you fall asleep from the potential carbon-monoxide, you're choice. If you are old enough to drive, go to the store, Target...and buy a carbon-monoxide detector for your trailer.

carbon monoxide detector reading 8 image

I moved into a new home in May of 2004 and at that time, it had brand new carbon monoxide alarms. It is a two story home. The alarm downstairs started to beep approximately every 45 seconds about 8 months so we installed new batteries, however it still beeped (please note our only gas appliance is our hot water heater in the garage). This problem continued so... I removed the battery until I could figure out what the problem was. Now the other alarm has started to beep and I just want to know for peace of mind, if there is a time frame as to when to replace the alarms.

Thanks for your continued help. I love Yahoo Answers!

Answer
Since it is a new home the Carbon Monoxide detector is also new ,I had the same problem and solved it by vacuuming the sensor because some dust got inside of it and these things are very sensitive to dust and insects alike , about replacing them according to what I have just read they recommend to change them every 3 to 5 years depending on the one that you have . I have a plug in model mine for over 10 years old and I test it from time to time to see if it's working ,if your is battery operated replace the batteries every time that you the time change occurs this way you will remember not only the time but smoke detectors and keep you and your family safe.

thanks for your great answers. i have about 95 percent of the carbon monoxide poisining symptoms. and when i woke up today i had an 102.5 fever.

Answer
That's quite a list of symptoms, maybe you have a urinary tract infection plus something else. While you are waiting for the test results, drink cranberry juice and eat yogurt or some form of probiotics.

I'm sure you would benefit from using probiotics (probiotics are in yogurt). Especially since you have had the diarrhea and urinary tract symptoms.

Also, do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home? If you don't, you should get one to rule out that possibility.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms

Exposure to carbon monoxide is most commonly accompanied by the following symptoms:

Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Flu-like symptoms, fatigue
Shortness of breath on exertion
Impaired judgment
Chest pain
Confusion
Depression
Hallucinations
Agitation
Vomiting
Abdominal pain
Drowsiness
Visual changes
Fainting
Seizure
Memory and walking problems

â¶â¶If you have fever, you need to tell your doctor to check for a urinary tract infection. Also, I don' know how old you are but some young men can get prostate infections It's called Prostatitis and sometimes gets confused with urinary tract infections.

After this brown out, we have had a few cases co poisoning in my area.
I checked the furnace today and my filter was upside down side ways in it.
I just got a couple new co detectors and these badges that I can stick in the suspected area to check levels.
Anyone used these before?
Any tips?
Thanks

Answer
The most common cause of CO is related to vent problems-i.e. cracked or plugged vent piping. A furnace can also create CO if the internal heat chamber is cracked.

My house is 20 years old and it is a 1 1/2 story with a full basement. The gas furnace/water heaters are in the basement. Access to the basement is through the interior of the house and it's walk-out. I'm planning on totally replacing the smoke detectors, they are not hard wired. With this considered, how many battery operated smoke detectors should I get for my home? 2600 sq feet finished living space with a full unfinished basement. Where should I install the Carbon Monoxide detector?

Answer
Check with your local fire department and they will be GLAD to come to your house and show you where to put up all your detectors and also what type of fire extinguishers to have and where to hang them. And it's a good idea in another aspect...the fire department refreshes themselves on your location. They may also provide window stickers for bedrooms and pets.

Can I break a North Carolina rental lease over 2 gas leaks within 5 months?

jondoe

I have had 2 gas leaks within a 5 month period. Carbon monoxide detectors were not installed untill after the leaks. We want to get out because of the danger that it might happen again. We have pets, a parrot especially that the gas could kill with only small amounts present.
My neighbor was told by the NC attorney general said she could break the lease due to the gas leaking from my house into her ajoining apartment.

Answer
No. The landlord did not cause the gas leaks! This is NOT their fault! Even if it was you cannot break a lease over repair issues without a court order. If they have fixed the known leaks and did install the carbon monoxide detectors then they have done all that they are legally required to do.

NOBODY can 100% gguarantee that any repair done will not happen again. You cannot live in fear. Are you going to move every time something has to been fixed in a place because it may happen again?

EDIT: If that is correct then it would be a direct conflict with the standard laws.

I dnt no how to stop it

Answer
Battery or batteries must have been getting old even with it not switched on. I betcha it would stop beeping if you replaced the battery or batteries. If you care about your sleep, replace the batteries. Otherwise, it's going to wake you up.

I have both smoke detector & carbon monoxide detector that came with the rental house. Had to replace batteries in one in the middle of the night. The other started beeping off & on a few months later. Tester showed batteries were okay, but still it kept beeping off & on. Slept with windows open & was quite fearful due to warnings all over detector that I should leave house & so on. Finally, figured out how to open it & went ahead & replaced batteries. It's fine now with no more beeping. That gives me the general rule of thumb. If it beeps & there's no fire, replace batteries. If it's a carbon monoxide detector, you can leave the house & call the fire dept. to check it out like the box says, or you can gamble on it & open the windows & run the ceiling fans in the dead of winter in case it's really carbon monoxide. If no more beeps, forget it. It's fine.

Carbon monoxide alarm going off?

Marissa

Every fire alarm has a carbon monoxide detector in our house, we also have 2 wall ones...the one in our basement (Fire alarm) is beeping 3-4 beebs every like 5 seconds, we put the 2 wall plug in ones down there and it doesn't detect anything..none of the other fire alarms down their are going off and neither are any others in the house..

What should we do? (My moms at work, i'm 16 and have no idea...I called my mom and she told me to try replacing the battery so i'm about to go buy one but still...any ideas?
If you look at it its the red light going off with CO and "move to fresh air" written next to it. My neighbor who is pretty good at this stuff is on his way over to help us out. Thanks!

Answer
I answered your question about the braces. Im 16 too! :D

And well, yeah wait till your neighbor comes over to help. I dont think there is any Carbon Monoxide in your house. It sounds like either the batteries are dead or it is a product malfunction. Sit tight and wait until your neighbor comes. He should be able to help out! If it keeps happening, replace the alarm completely. If it still goes off, there must be some carbon monoxide setting it off! But I doubt there is anything to worry about!

Recently I have heard about deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning from home heaters. I live in a small apartment, and the heating unit is locked in a service closet. I have a detector, but worry about pets when I am not home. How does the carbon monoxide get out and should I take any other precautions?

Answer
Buy a digital display CO detector with the UL 2034 listing.

Do you know if the heating system is a condensing furnace? If it is then you shouldn't have to worry about flue gas getting into your apartment. You can call the gas supplier to check if you think their is a problem or you find your CO detector is reading low levels.

My Gram's carbon monoxide detector is going off...?

She and her assistant have changed the batteries like twice...i'm about to go over there. She doesn't have a car... Any ideas what it could be?

Answer
She needs to get out of the house until she finds out for sure. Take the detector outside with them because it should turn off if there is no carbon monoxide to set it off. (just in case they think it is defective)

more info from the web.....

What to do if your Carbon Monoxide Detector goes off
What to do and who to you call when your carbon monoxide detector goes into alarm?

The manufacturer of First Alert, the leading brand of carbon monoxide detectors, recommends the following if the alarm goes off:
Turn off appliances, or other sources of combustion at once.
Immediately get fresh air into the premises by opening doors and windows.
Call a qualified technician and have the problem fixed before restarting appliances.
If anyone is experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headaches, dizziness, vomiting, call the fire department and immediately move to a location that has fresh air.
Do a head count to be sure all persons are accounted for.
Do not re-enter the premises until it has been aired out and the problem corrected.

To identify the source/s of carbon monoxide, have a professional check the following :

Gas or oil furnaces are frequently the source of carbon monoxide leaks. Measure concentrations of carbon monoxide in flue gases. Check all connections to flue pipes and venting systems for cracks, gaps, rust, corrosion or debris. Check the filters and filtering systems for dirt and blockages. Check the combustion chamber and heat exchanger for cracks, holes, metal fatigue or corrosion.

Check furnace flame, burners and ignition systems. A predominately yellow, flat, lazy-looking flame in a natural gas furnace indicates fuel is not burning efficiently and is thus releasing higher than usual levels of carbon monoxide. Oil furnaces with a similar problem produce an 'oil' odor, but remember you can't smell, see or taste carbon monoxide.

Chimneys and venting systems must be carefully checked for blockages caused by debris, animal nests, cracks, holes or cave-ins. A blocked chimney or venting system can force dangerous gases back into your home.

Venting and fan systems on all fuel burning appliances must be inspected for proper installation to assure carbon monoxide is vented out rather than in. Don't forget gas water heaters, clothes dryers, space heaters or wood burning stoves.

Inspect fireplaces for blocked or bent chimneys or flues, soot and debris or holes in the chimney that could release carbon monoxide exhaust back into the home.

Stove pilot lights in a closed-up home can be a source of carbon monoxide build-up if not operating properly because they are not vented to the outside. Check to be sure they are operating properly.
Fireplace pilot lights can also produce carbon monoxide and should be checked regularly.
Never burn charcoal inside no matter how much you want to recapture summer and never use your gas stove as a heater. Keep the oven door closed and use it for cooking only.

Never leave a car running in an attached garage even if the garage door is open.

Taking time to understand the characteristics of carbon monoxide and how Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) listed carbon monoxide detectors work could save your life.

According to UL Standard 2034, home carbon monoxide detectors must sound a warning before carbon monoxide levels reach 100 parts per million over 90 minutes, 200 parts per million over 35 minutes or 400 parts per million over 15 minutes. The standard requires the alarm must sound before an average, heathy adult begins to experience symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. The warning provides time to evacuate the premises.

I just plugged in a first alert carbon monoxide detector down in basement. The horn will sound once or twice every 20 minutes or so and the red light will flash every so often also. Is this a malfunction or is there CO in my home?

Answer
A very load chirping noise.

We have a new kerosene heater, is it alright to use the kerosene that one already has?

I have been using an upright kerosene heater. Due to the warm weather here in NC, I have not had a chance to crank it up. But I have recently purchased a new flat top kerosene heater. I have some left over kerosene from last winter and was wondering if it would alright to use the kerosene that I have on hand or would it be prudent to go and get some new or have some new mixed in with the old?

I would like some answers ASAP for a winter storm warning is in effect for tomorrow in my area. Thank you all.

Answer
Please keep in mind -- there is the danger of Carbon Monoxide poisoning with ANY open flame combustion.

Pay attention to the warnings on the packaging and on the unit.

Open flame space heaters, such as a kerosene heater, need to be used in a WELL VENTILATED space. A HEADACHE, or feeling of drowsiness are among the FIRST SYMPTOMS of overexposure to CO. Carbon Monoxide is invisible, and odorless.... Please do not operate this unit without a CO detector in the room. It could save your life.

With the recent power outages across Missouri, many people were using portable generators. One family had a generator in their garage. The wife went out to fill the tank... and was dead before she reached the generator... that is how quickly CO in an enclosed space can kill.

Interestingly -- Most manufactured home builders will VOID your warranty, if you use a Kerosene heater in a mobile or modular home.

As to the kerosene you mention, any flammable liquid can absorb water (most often by condensation inside the container), and this will cause the fuel to burn less efficiently, and to smoke more. My personal solution to this, would be to set the heater OUTSIDE, and burn the old fuel up. Then start with some fresh fuel...again.... burning it for a while OUTSIDE, to make sure the old fuel had been completely consumed. Naturally, you want to do this in a safe location.

I personally prefer to use electric space heaters (ceramic, or oil-contained - radiant) and a generator. The generator can also help power your refrigerator, and/or some lights, depending on it's size. I place the generator OUTSIDE the home, and run a very heavy duty extension cord to inside the home. This keeps my family warm, with lights, and safe from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Be Safe (and good luck with the storm)

Do fire alarms actually save lives or just deafen people?

Q. I've always said that if the house is on fire the thing that will wake me up is the fire. And I don't live in a mansion, worst comes to worse I hop out a window and break a leg.

Are there any real instances of people waking up from real fires and living?

Answer
Smoke detectors save lives. The silent killer, carbon monoxide, will displace oxygen and kill you long before you burn. I have carried bodies out of houses that didn't have a single burn on them. But they died because they did not have working smoke detectors. and CO got them as they slept. CO detectors also save lots of lives. That's why you should check you batteries when you change the clocks for daylight savings time and standard time. I see people all the time who got out of their houses or apartments alive because of smoke detectors.

Why does my Carbon Monoxide detector keep going off?

Stephen T

We have a brand new First Alert smoke/carbon monoxide detector. One day it was going off when I came home for lunch. I called the fire dept. and they came and did a test and said my levels were normal for the basement. A few weeks ago it started going off again so I opened a window. We felt no symptoms. This morning it went off yet again.

Is my device faulty? What could be the problems. Every time it has gone off I have replaced the batteries just in case the signal meant low battery.

Answer
I would try a different unit (or even different brand) and see if the results are the same. You might even try getting separate smoke/CO detectors and try different locations. And if it goes off again, I would have the fire department come and check more than the basement (and they should use two detectors to make sure THEIR readings are accurate). There's a whole myriad of factors involved here; I wouldn't rest until I was sure I wasn't in any danger. People die from CO poisoning every day. I've found a couple of websites that might help:

What can I do about a smoke detector than uses batteries very frequently.?

Both ULI and Kidde detectors installed in my house seem to be eating batteries . The ULI detector was manufactured in 2009. The Kidde one in 2010. ULI says it is warranted for 5 years, Kidde for 10 years. Kidde one has suddenly been false alarming carbon monoxide detected when hard wired. Could the hard wiring need to be replaced? My house was built in 1986. Detectors have been replaced several times over the years. The combo carbon monoxide/smoke detectors seem to have more false alarms and are eating up 9 V back up batteries. Help!

Answer
If the voltage is wrong it could be killing the alarms and they are constantly on the battery hence the reason they seem to go through batteries and false alarm.

You could have AC detectors and your home smoke detector circuit is DC (not good).

You could have DC detectors and the power on the line is AC(not good).

Or the voltage could be wrong it may be 120v ac and the detectors are 24vac. (not good)

Sounds to me like it is time to break out the volt meter and do some sleuthing and them go get the right detectors or rewire the detector power circuit in your home.

I have a Kidde Combo Smoke Alarm amd Carbon Monoxide Detector. Last night it was beeping every minute or so. I took batteries out tested for 1.18 volts , they're low. I put in brand new Energizer Max A A's each measure 1.57 volts digital meter. They were new out of the Wal Mart package. Still beeps once a minute. I double checked position/ polarity , they still beep once per minute?

Answer
most likely you need to press (or press and hold) the 'test' button.

A couple of weeks ago my stupid self brought a gas can inside of my kitchen and left it there overnight. My carbon monoxide alarm started to beep (one beep per 10 seconds or so). So I took the gas can outside figuring that that was why the alarm went off. The alarm went off again a couple of more times after that. So things seem to get better...now its been like two weeks since I took the gas can outside and it has gone off again? Same beeping. Could it be the battery needs to get replaced?

Answer

I live in an apartment and I woke up this morning to my carbon monoxide alarm beeping throughout my house. The first thing I did was call the apartment manager thinkinghe would call the fire department. He sent over some guy that walked around the house and replaced the alarm. I opened the windows. The guy that came over saidhe smelt something burning but you cant smell carbon monoxide. The new alarm is not going off. Should I just leave it alone unless the new alarm starts to go off?

Answer
Did the guy test the new alarm after he installed it? Does it have batteries in it? The old detector could have been old and went bad. If you have pets & won't be home all day, I'd call the fire department (on the non-emergency number) & have them check the place out so you don't have dead pets when you come home from work. If you are going to be home all day listen for the alarm going off again, and watch to see if you get a headache or start feeling lightheaded/woozy. Opening up the windows could have just aired out original build-up (if there was carbon monoxide), so be on alert the next day or two.

I am seeing carbon monoxide detectors on my boat false alarm at times. These are both the regular variety and the very sensitive aviation types. There are no boats or engines running nearby, no flames, aerosols in use, no combustion engines of any kind. What other gasses might cause these to false alarm?

Answer
It's possible that the humidity is affecting the performance of the sensors as well. Try running a hair dryer on an open detector to dry out the components.

If you're on the ocean, the salt could be causing issues as well. You'll probably need to switch them out if it's a salt issue, as cleaning them probably isn't an option.

Where/how to put carbon monoxide detector in a small bedroom?

sam

I have a gas heater in my very small bedroom (my room is only 12x12x 8 feet), and have been trying to put carbon monoxide alarm there. But every time I put and leave the alarm for only 5 minutes in the room, the alarm sounds. I believe it sounds because the alarm is less than 15 feet from the gas heater.

Is there anybody who has idea how to solve this problem? Where and how am I supposed to put the alarm to detect carbonmonoxide in my small bedroom? Thanks a lot.

Answer
You should get your room tested by a professional for carbon monoxide. The alarm is designed to detect the presence of CO (carbon monoxide) and it's detecting it. Since you're living in the same area the alarm is in, you're being exposed to that CO. Don't mess around - many, many people have died in their sleep from CO poisoning.

Some causes of CO generation are caused by the exhaust gasses no being vented properly (blocked chimney), or blocked source of fresh air. Both these situations can kill you. Call a certified heating and cooling guy. Do you really trust life and death questions to anonymous people who have no qualifications to answer those types of questions?
