Why does my fire alarm keep going off?

carbon monoxide detector 2 beeps on VW Campervan Conversions: Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Campervans
carbon monoxide detector 2 beeps image
Q. Ok So it went off fully the other night, and has gone off 2ce just a few short beeps some other nights. I changed the battery, was ok for 2 day then happened again. There's no smoke around that region, why is this happening. :(
It is quite an old smoke alarm though

Answer
Is it a combination smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector? If so, you could be having a CO leak.
Your best bet is to call the fire department non emergency number and ask them to come out and check for you.
Most (if not all) fire departments will gladly come out and check your alarms at no charge. They'd rather check for a false alarm than be called to a dead family.
If it is a hardwire with a battery back up, it may mean that you are having fluctuations in your electrical current.

Cancelling ADT security service ?

wannafren

I recently activated an existing ADT system into a house I moved into. Its been a month and I havent even received a contact, which I was supposed to receive in 1 week to sign and send back to ADT. I have called customer service about 6 times in the past one month and I am sick of talking to them. Customer service keeps on asking me to wait for it and says my account shows as inactive, even though its being monitored. Can I cancel my service without paying a fee since I havent signed anything yet ? Has anyone had any such horrible experiences with ADT ?

Answer
Actually I have had ADT for years and the couple of times that I had a issue they have hopped right on it. Nothing major just things like the Carbon Monoxide detector starts beeping if it has not been replaced for 5 years.

As an existing customer it is been hard enough to get a contract. Imagine how hard it would be to clear up that you don't owe the cancellation fee if you cancelled it now.

You wanted the service right and its working. So I really would not sweat it as companies can be slow. Sure you could probably spend hours on the phone working your way up the ladder but that would be a pain. If you ever have to though everytime I have had some major issue with say Verizon or something I have usually gotten through to the top by asking for a "senior resolution specialist".

Did you sign up with some third party site rather than directly with ADT? And are your sure it's being monitored? I would set it off and see if they call you. Now that I think about it you might wish to call if it has not come in say 2 weeks.

But yea I suppose you could cancel as you did not sign anything. If you put this on a credit card you could dispute the charge if you really had to.

Answer
Being in the industry and NOT making money off this advice, my personal opinion might be slightly different than that of Jon. I do share some of his opinions but although simple noise only alarms are effective at warding off most, I have been to houses where entire panels have been ripped off the wall and nobody knew about it until they got home. Nothing worse than walking into a house with someone unexpected in it.

All that aside, most crackheads will avoid houses with stickers. The other advantages of monitored systems are insurance discounts, monitored smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

As for what security system is best for your home, first of all I would say stay away from wireless. Although many sales people will tell you wireless security systems are superior to hardwire, they are just playing the numbers game. Wireless is easier and faster to install, therefor they can pay less money in labour and still get the monitoring account. Really a wine loose situation to their benefit. http://ezinearticles.com/?Wireless-Security-Systems---The-True-Cost&id=562150
Or there is more in the archive on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca

The system you choose should really be customized around what you feel is important. The larger your home, the more zones and devices you need. A zone is an input on the panel which gets connected to a detection device (Which is basically a switch) Detection devices can be door contacts, motion detector, glassbreak sensor, smoke detectors etc. There is more info again on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca Articles of particular interest would be protection 101 and False alarm info. There is also some tips and advice on some non-electronic methods to make your home less desirable to the crackhead element.

Last bit of advice, try to find a local company with a proven track record. Companies listed as "authorized dealers" typically sell their monitoring accounts to the head company usually leaving you with a poor level of service.

what could this weird gas smell from my gas stove?

Bird N

the gas company came out and they guy had his detector or whatever. He said that it might be carbon monoxide and it might be incomplete combustion from one of the pilot lights and that they may need adjustment and that it wasn't a natural gas leak. I only smell it when I stand in front of the gas stove. He also recommended I open a door or window when I have the stove or oven on. He also pointed out the debris flakes under the stove cover as fuel debris or whatever. I put a carbon monoxide detector in the kitchen for about an hour and it didn't go off. What should I do? Call an appliance repair company? will it be expensive? Thanks!

Answer
I doubt that it would take a repair person very long, a service call, probably in the $45-$75 area depending on your location, plus time and materials, say another 1/2 hour. I'm guessing $100 total. You might well try this yourself. Go to a store that sells welders and welding supplies and ask for a "welding tip cleaner". It will be in the $5-7 range and is a small aluminum case with a series of round wires in various diameters, which are actually files. They are used to clean gas welding tips which have various sizes of orifices. Shut off the gas valve behind the stove, and use the tip cleaner to clean the pilot light orifices. The small files are flexible and will bend and you can increase to larger sizes until you feel metal to metal contact. Then, turn the gas back on and relight your pilots. If there is no improvement, you aren't out much, and the tip cleaner can come in handy. They are great for cleaning the windshield washer nozzles on your car. Good luck.

is there a gadget I can buy to determine gas leaks in house?

BeautifulR

Would you suggest a carbon monoxide detector and a gas sniffer of some sort? where do I get one and how much are they?

I had a plumber fix one of the pipes today, but I still smell gas. I had the gas turned off outside my house. This house is 5 years old and has the bendable type gas pipes... do these leak easier?

HELP!!!

Answer
A carbon monoxide detector doesn't detect a gas leak. Most reliable gas sniffers are very expensive.

I can't speak to bendable gas pipes.

Do you know if the plumber checked his work using soapy water or a similar liquid? If not then you may have a leak and the plumber needs to come back check out his work.

If the smell is very strong then you really need to shut off your gas until someone can check it out. In some locations, the gas company will come out and check for leaks.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors?

Should they be mounted high on a wall or low to the floor to properly detect Carbon Monoxide?
The detector I have is in no way going to be slept through, believe me. Should I mount it at head level with the bed? I guess really what I'm also trying to find out is if Carbon Monoxide is heavier or lighter than air.

Answer
It is recommend you place CO alarms near the sleeping areas, and on each level of the home. A good rule of thumb for the number and placement of CO alarms for your particular home is to place CO alarms near smoke and fire alarms that have been installed to meet current building code requirements in your area. Do not place CO alarms in the furnace room, kitchen or garage as these locations could lead to nuisance alarms.

Generally, one detector can be adequate for 1,200 to 1,500 square feet of living space. The most important determination for the number of CO alarms needed is whether an alarm can be heard in all sleeping areas. If you install only one CO alarm in your home, install the detector near bedrooms, not in the basement or furnace room.

For ease of viewing the visual indicators, (digital displays or alarm lights), it is recommended to place the CO alarm at eye level or above. Do not place the CO alarm in "dead air" spaces (no closer than 6" from the ceiling or floor) or turbulent air spaces such as by an open window, door or by a ceiling fan.

How long does it take for carbon monoxide to kill you?

blah

This morning the carbon monoxide alarm went off in our house. My dad called the fire department, they came and checked and said everything seemed okay and said we could go back in our house. My sister and I are still a little freaked out, and my 10 year old sister is scared to go to sleep because my brother told her carbon monoxide kills you in your sleep. He also said the fire department didn't even check for carbon monoxide because they didn't take any machines or anything in the house. I think he's just trying to scare my sister and I but I'm still a little freaked out. This happened this morning at about 11:30am, and now it's 6:40pm. Would we be dead already if there was carbon monoxide in the house? Or what?
Stupid question, sorry lol, my brother is just freaking me out a little.

Answer
Don't let him get to you. Sometimes the detector could go off just because the battery.

Often people who have a mild to moderate problem will find they feel sick while they spend time at home. They might feel a little better outside in the fresh air but will have re-occurring symptoms shortly after returning home. If other members of the family have re-occurring bouts with flu-like symptoms while fuel-burning appliances are being used it may be time to have the house checked by a professional.
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Low levels of carbon monoxide poisoning can be confused with flu symptoms, food poisoning or other illnesses and carry a long-term health risk if left unattended. Some of the symptoms are:

Shortness of breath
Mild nausea
Mild headaches
Moderate levels of CO exposure can cause death if the following symptoms persist for a long measure of time.

Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Light-headedness
High levels of CO can be fatal causing death within minutes.

Treatment Options
There are immediate measures you can take to help those suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Get the victim into fresh air immediately.
If you can not get the people out of the house, open all windows and doors immediately. Any combustion appliances should be turned off.
Take those who were subjected to carbon monoxide to a hospital emergency room as quickly as possible. A simple blood test will be able to determine if carbon monoxide poisoning has occurred.

How many smoke detectors should I have in my home? Where should I put my Carbon Monoxide Detector?

carbon monoxide detector years image

boo4yoo

My house is 20 years old and it is a 1 1/2 story with a full basement. The gas furnace/water heaters are in the basement. Access to the basement is through the interior of the house and it's walk-out. I'm planning on totally replacing the smoke detectors, they are not hard wired. With this considered, how many battery operated smoke detectors should I get for my home? 2600 sq feet finished living space with a full unfinished basement. Where should I install the Carbon Monoxide detector?

Answer
Check with your local fire department and they will be GLAD to come to your house and show you where to put up all your detectors and also what type of fire extinguishers to have and where to hang them. And it's a good idea in another aspect...the fire department refreshes themselves on your location. They may also provide window stickers for bedrooms and pets.

Our house was built 6 years ago, should we need to still buy a Carbon Monoxide Detector?

Q. We moved into our house one year ago, but I was wondering and seriously considering buying a carbon Monoxide detector because we have a furnace. We bought them for our house in the UK, just to be safe, but the house was like typical houses in the UK oldish. Since our house in the US is newer, should we need to still buy a detector? Thank You.
Off to get 3 now, thank you all.......
I bought 3 first response C M Detectors, and there in the lounge, master bedroom and childrens playroom. Thanks again!

Answer
If you have any natural gas running through your house, then the answer is DEFINITELY YES! It doesn't matter how old or efficient a natural gas appliance is, it can still give off carbon monoxide, and you wouldn't even know until you and your family got sick, if you even woke up at all. If your house uses all electric then no, you'll never need a carbon monoxide detector, but if you have gas, and love your family get one. It never hurts, and is one of those "just in case" precautions.

carbon monoxide detectors end of life image

So this morning I woke up and it started to beep. I tried to switch batteries and now it beeps once every twelve or so seconds.

Answer
Periodic beeping or chirping, rather than a continuous alarm, is indicative of a problem with the detector itself rather than a carbon monoxide problem. Assuming the battery you put in was good and properly connected, then it could be the detector has reached its end of life (they're only good for 5-7 years, depending on make and model).

Fire alarm malfunction?

Jess1727

My kiddie alarm smoke/carbon monoxide detector had a low battery alarm. Upon replacing the battery and reattaching the wire, the alarm goes off continuously, setting off the same hallway alarm, and finally the 3 bedroom alarms. Pressing the button did nothing, finally I had to disconnect both kiddie alarms and remove the batteries to stop the "fire fire" alarms.
Is it possible both alarms are malfunctioning? Are any replacement alarms wired the same as the kiddie?

Thanks!

Answer
Maybe it a malfunction of the low battery warning. How old are the alarms?

â LOW BATTERY: When the batteries are low and
need replacing the red LED light will flash and the
unit will âchirpâ one time, followed by the warning
message âLOW BATTERYâ. This cycle will occur once
every minute for the first hour. After the first hour
the red LED light will continue to flash every minute
accompanied by the âchirpâ only sound. The voice
message âLOW BATTERYâ will sound once every
fifteen minutes during the âchirpâ only cycle.
This will continue for at least seven days.
⢠One âchirpâ every 30 seconds is an indication that
the alarm is malfunctioning. If this occurs call the
Consumer Hotline at 1-800-880-6788.
⢠After seven (7) years of cumulative power up, this unit
will âchirpâ twice every 30 seconds. This is an
"operational end of life" feature which will indicate
that it is time to replace the alarm.

Is there a way to detect carbon monoxide without a detector?

Astronaut

My mother thinks Im crazy and wont plug ours in and even the pets are acting strange. Is there another way? I have no money to spare. Is there a simple way to tell?

Answer
yes, your skin turns bright red and you die.

There are probably city or county public service groups you can contact, tell them you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. But you should work it out with your mother first. Is there any other relative you can talk to?

edit: what happens if you turn on the detector when your mother is not home? Does it go off? If it does, and your mother insists on ignoring it, contact the police immediately. Getting her angry is minor compared to dying.

What to do with security system?

carbon monoxide detectors for sale on Motorhomes For Sale By Owners - RV Classifieds
carbon monoxide detectors for sale image

Ben F

My condo is pre-wired for security monitoring (like ADT, brinks), but the service isn't actually included in the association fees (meaning I'd have to pay for it myself).

What else can I do with the system? I'd like to be able to get some level of security out of the system. Is there a free service I could use? Or can I buy something that would automatically do the 911 call if the alarm goes off?

Answer
If the place is pre-wired installing an alarm system is generally less expensive. If you call around some companies are willing to install "local" alarm systems (Meaning not monitored, only a siren will sound). This is not something I would recommend however it is can be an option if you are on a budget. Just be prepared to pay a little more for the installation as alarm companies make money from the re-curring revenues of monitoring.

As for the system calling 911 on it's own. This is no longer an option in any location I know of. The reason being, police are busy enough that dealing with nuisance false alarms is too much for them to handle without passing the costs on via increased taxes. Hence the need for third party monitoring stations.

I have written a number of articles on home protection, both electronic and otherwise. Please feel free to check them out on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. Protection 101 and False alarms may be of particular interest to you. There are also some others in the archive, which involve abit of reading.

Obviously, being in the security alarm industry I would recommend a monitored security system. First of all you will get a discount on your home insurance, secondly, if something does happen, at least you can be comfortable in knowing your home is secure when you unlock the front door. You can also add life safety detectors such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors which will more than pay for themselves in the added piece of mind. I know this may sound like ad-speak, but as you are probably not in my service area, I have nothing to gain by this recommendation.

In addition, your place is pre-wired, if a sales person comes in there trying to sell you a wireless system saying the technology is "superior" it is a good sign to send them on their way back to the toy company.

Can I use radon detector gas to get the reading for carbon monoxide level?

westofrest

We have a radon detector that was used to test the radon level in the basement. Can we use it to get an accurate reading for carbon monoxide level instead of using a carbon monoxide detector? Thank you.

Answer
I don't think so. There is a carbon monoxide circular device that is aliken to the fire alarm circular device you attach to the ceiling in your home. They say this cm device should be placed by your windows as well as in your garage and bedroom. I heard they are about $20 each at Home Depot. In my humble opinion you don't need to know the "levels" what you need to know is when it's there and to leave promptly upon hearing the alarm. Btw, radon can be present in rooms that rarely have the windows open as it gets trapped. So as I understand it, it's around, just don't harness it.

How do I install a hardwired smoke/carbon monoxide detector in my home?

maltesefal

At times, the present detector's alarm sounds for no reason and must be replaced. I'd like to do it myself and avoid the expenses of a professional. I know how to shut off the electricity at the site and have all necessary tools.

Answer
Call an electrician if you mess up the detector will not work this could be very dangerous. It isn't like wiring a light if you mess up a light it just wont work you mess up this and the smoke will fail to sound during a fire.

If you don't know how to do it how do you know you have the tools you need.

********"Hi i am glad to me you" has no clue what he is taking bout there in no positive or negative wiring in a house. Electrical tape is almost never to be used for a permanent connection it will dry out with age and loose it adhesive leave the wire exposed to arcing and become a fire hazard. In the rare case tape is use for a permanent connection(burndies for very large wires in industrial setting) it is a special fat rubber tape that you will not find at home depot a roll is about $10 and an entire roll is used for just one connection making a ball of tape about the size of a baseball

Many code rules in play here smoke placement using 14-3 not 14-2 all smokes must be on an arc fault breaker

this is NOT a do it yourself type project

Answer
There are a number of things that this could be, but the most serious is carbon monoxide poisoning. If she lives with other people, they would all have the same symptoms if this is carbon monoxide poisoning - you can rule this out if other inhabitants are not sick. If you think this could be CO poisoning, she should not sleep or spend any time in her house until it is checked by the fire department or checked with a carbon monoxide detector/alarm that you can get from a Walmart.

Is there a certain threshold before a carbon monoxide alarm will sound?

carbon monoxide detectors wiki on In our latest news video, we covered one of the exciting past events ...
carbon monoxide detectors wiki image

sarah

I've noticed my kittie carbon monoxide detector register several times but no alarm ever sounded, is this normal. first time it was 35. i figured the levels might be too low. today it registered over 100 and it never sounded off an alarm. There is no 1800 number i can call them to ask.

Answer
The alarm points on carbon monoxide detectors are not a simple alarm level (as in smoke detectors) but are a concentration-time function. At lower concentrations (eg 100 parts per million) the detector will not sound an alarm for many tens of minutes. At 400 parts per million (PPM), the alarm will sound within a few minutes. This concentration-time function is intended to mimic the uptake of carbon monoxide in the body while also preventing false alarms due to relatively common sources of carbon monoxide such as cigarette smoke.

Answer
Carbon Monoxide
Wikipedia: (link : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide ) Carbon monoxide, with the chemical formula CO, is a colorless, odorless and tasteless, yet highly toxic gas. Its molecules consist of one carbon atom and one oxygen atom, connected by a covalent double bond and a dative covalent bond. It is the simplest oxocarbon, and can be viewed as the anhydride of formic acid (CH2O2).

Carbon monoxide is produced from the partial oxidation of carbon-containing compounds; it forms in preference to the more usual carbon dioxide (CO2) when there is a reduced availability of oxygen, such as when operating a stove or an internal combustion engine in an enclosed space. Carbon monoxide has significant fuel value, burning in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide. Despite its serious toxicity, it was once widely used (as the main component of coal gas) for domestic lighting, cooking and heating, and in the production of nickel. Carbon monoxide still plays a major role in modern technology, in industrial processes such as iron smelting and as a precursor to myriad products.

EPA : (link) www.epa.gov/iaq/co.html

Have a service man check your hot water heater, to make sure it is burning properly, and VENTING PROPERLY !

Carbon monoxide can only be detected by a CO detector or meter!

You DONâT KNOW!
THATâS THE KILLER PART!
You canât smell or taste it. The only symptom I know of, that may inform you is if you feel sick to your stomach and may up-chuck before passing out â but not always.

As for time to kill, it depends on some factors, co flow, fresh air flow into the area, how near you are to it. ITâS NOT TO BE MESSED WITH, âIF IN DOUBT GET EVERYONE OUTâ AND then CALL 911, for fire rescue.

Only way to stop it is have the unit âprofessionallyâ checked out!
Come from: improper burner settings and improper venting.

Yes! It can come from a dryer if the dryer is GAS, not electric!

What do you mean by âone of those medal thingsâ? Do you mean a flapper door, on the outside of the house, where the vent exits, NO.

Again referring to the above answer âflapper doorâ , that help to keep animals and bugs from entering the house, but it doesnât always work.

Yes, CO can re-enter the house from a vent if the conditions are right. As the burned gas vents outside the wind can carry it back into the house thru an open window!

Hope this helps!
Good Luck!

Whats the harm in leaving a gas stove top (open flame) on ?

carbon monoxide detectors review on ... Smoke & Carbon Alarms Sylglas Carbon Monoxide Colour... / Type
carbon monoxide detectors review image

Dusty

Ive been reviewing many answers on yahoo answers about this topic and they all seem to go back and forth. So im asking a more specific question in search of VERY specific answers..

Our electricity has been out for about 48 hours now and my duplex is getting pretty cold. Ive got no heat, no electricity, only gas, which allows me to still have hot showers as the hot water heater works only on gas alone with a non-electrical thermostat.

Being the house is so cold, Ive tried to light the gas oven and that didn't work. I also tried to light the gas stove top and that DID work. I used an electric fire starter to light the stove top because the electric pilot light starter doesn't work due to the power outage. Over the last two days that the power has been out, ive been able to cook lunch and dinner on the stove top as long as i light it myself. Ive found nothing wrong with doing that and the stove stays lit just fine. The flame also looks normal like it should the whole time im cooking at any gas setting I want.

Well, I started to think, whats the difference in leaving the stove top on with the flame going or having a gas fireplace running ? Flame is flame and heat is heat so whats the difference ? is what i was thinking.. So I left the stove top flame on and I went to the hardware store. As long as its burning, whats the deal ?

Well I came home last night from the hardware store and my roommate was home.. and earlier this morning, he rips my ass for leaving the stove top on and leaving the house.. He claims that I could have blown the house up, or killed him and his girlfriend and he was really upset. He claimed that I could have killed them both by carbon monoxide poisoning. I apologized and told him im sorry. I also said I wont ever do it again for his sake to avoid further conflict but, Ive spent the whole day thinking about it and I cant see the severity of the issue any differently.

We have a gas water heater in the basement of this duplex with a flame the size of large dinner plate underneath it that stays lit and running on high for hours after we take long hot showers. And that's not dangerous or been a threat to him or us at all. Same thing, its just under a tank full of water rather than on top of a stove.

Growing up with my mom, we use to turn the stove on and the stove door cracked open all day long for heat. And that was a gas stove with a flame on the inside bottom of it too ! She also had a gas fireplace installed later and we have left that thing running all night before for heat and it hasn't been a threat or danger to use.. A lot of people all over the world use gas fireplaces. Ive heard a bunch of people talk about cracking the windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning ? Well why in the world would you crack a door or window when its 10 below outside and your purpose is to get heat anyways ? sounds stupid to me.

He even argued, well what if something would have fell on the stove or flame ? then the whole house would have burnt down.. And well, yeah that's true, but, there's nothing around the stove that could have ever "fell" on top of it anyway to even become ignited.

So Im not asking for opinions from Worried Willeys, Negative Nancies, or Safety Suzies. I simply want to know the facts.. Also... if carbon monoxide is produced from from the combustion of natural gas such as with a stove top, which i could understand. I would like to get an idea of how much.. Like.. if You leave two stove tops on and burning at medium strength for say an hour... Is that really going to do any harm ? or pose any threat ? People all around the world cook for longer and harder intervals than that on holidays and often a few times a week ! And gas fireplaces stay burning way longer than that as well. So is my roomate blowing this out of proportion ?

Answer
You shouldn't have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning unless you are in a tiny air-tight room. A detector is a good idea though. As far as blowing anything up ...... no. It aint gonna happen unless you fill the house with gas first and then light it. ....

Fire/Carbon Monoxide Alarm?

TorontoBlu

Went of at 530am today everyone was asleep, only on second floor I believe, went for about 20secs then off on for another 30ish, dad left to take alarm to home depot or something and took the alarm for inspection m. I'm way to scared and skecthed out to go back to sleep, we've got 2n1 Co and Fire alarms on all 3 floors we all sleep on the third, family of 5 just died in Whitehorse, Yukon cause of CO and I'm pretty freaked out. Who do we call, 911, 311(city) or what cause I kind of want an inspection to be done of my house etc. Not feeling any if the symptoms of Co poisining. Any general assistance/help/tops would be greatly appreciated

Answer
If a CM alarm goes off you should take it seriously, because that's what it's there for. Carbon Monoxide is invisible and undetectable by humans. Only when you start getting headaches and/or sleepy may you realize things are not right, then it may be too late of you drop off to sleep and then it's lethal.

Check all your gas appliances. If the flame is yellow or orange you have a problem. Check your fume outlets too, for blockages. Next time, open all the windows and call a qualified plumber or gas inspector. Ideally, you should have a detector changed according to the recommended life of it (3 to 5 years).

Get your family to work out an emergency escape plan in the event of fire and ensure that everyone knows the drill if the CM alarm goes off (windows open/get fresh air through the building/everyone awake/exit the house if need be/call a professional).

I guess your fire department are the best ones to give you real safety advice. They should be happy to come round and give you a safety review. I'm in the uk and our fire dept does that all the time, on request.

We have a brand new First Alert smoke/carbon monoxide detector. One day it was going off when I came home for lunch. I called the fire dept. and they came and did a test and said my levels were normal for the basement. A few weeks ago it started going off again so I opened a window. We felt no symptoms. This morning it went off yet again.

Is my device faulty? What could be the problems. Every time it has gone off I have replaced the batteries just in case the signal meant low battery.

Answer
I would try a different unit (or even different brand) and see if the results are the same. You might even try getting separate smoke/CO detectors and try different locations. And if it goes off again, I would have the fire department come and check more than the basement (and they should use two detectors to make sure THEIR readings are accurate). There's a whole myriad of factors involved here; I wouldn't rest until I was sure I wasn't in any danger. People die from CO poisoning every day. I've found a couple of websites that might help:

Is it bad that my carbon monoxide detector is up high?

LMC

My friend just pointed out to me that if my carbon monoxide detector ever went off, I would probably be dead by that point because it is right beneath the ceiling. He said it should be near the floor because then it will detect the carbon monoxide right away. I never really thought about it cause it was in that spot when I moved into my apartment so I figured it was normal to be there. What do you guys think?

Answer
hey i looked it up on line and the majority of responses say to place them close to the ceiling because the carbon monoxide will rise with warm air and if it is to low to the floor it will not be detected but there are also wall adapter ones that are lower to the ground. so i think we are ok.

Would a carbon monoxide detector detect a gas leak?

Me

My mum keeps saying she is getting a whiff of gas. She said she got it when she was in the bath which was about 8 hours ago.
I can't smell it but since she mentioned it my nose is tingling. Out boiler has been going funny over these few weeks shutting itself off.
In my bedroom by the boiler we have a carbon monoxide detector. Would it detect a gas leak?

Answer
No unless it says on it that it is a multi gas detector. Most carbon monoxide detectors only detect carbon monoxide. There are some high end ones that detect other gases but these are well marked.

Why does my carbon monoxide alarm keep going off?

Everytime my mother cooks using the stove, the carbon monoxide detector goes off. It seems like every sunday when she cooks for a long period of time faithfully the detector goes off like an hour after the stove has been shut off. I take it down remove the battery and open the windows. about 20 minutes later i put it back up....no alarm goes off. the battery is new so that shouldnt be an issue. The only thing i am fearing is a possible gas leak. What should i do?

Answer
It could be a couple of things.
How old is the detector? They have a sensor that only lasts so long and they should be replaced every 5 years.
If your mother is cooking with gas is there an exhaust fan that removes the air to the outside of the house? If not it could be caused by the recirculation of the combustion air back into the flames.
A good flame should also be a light blue, if it is a lazy yellow flame then there isn't enough primary air (air that is mixed with the gas before combustion) if that is the case then you should ask someone who knows how to adjust it and they should also check for soot which may be evidence of flame impingement.
Gas, like electricity, it is safe if done properly but can be very dangerous if done wrong and Carbon monoxide is very dangerous and any warnings should not be ignored.

I was told today that all apartments should have carbon dioxide detectors. that the person believed it was in the housing law (just like every apartment must have fire alarms and an extinguisher ) Now I live in New York State. In the city of Syracuse. I need to know if its true before I call and demand that they instale one. We bought one to put in the nursery for the baby (when he comes LOL I have to get everything done now so I know its done) Thanks for the help.
hahah rolfl I did not catch that I typed dioxide instead of monoxide. LOL thanks for pointing it out!!!

Answer
Not true! If you have electric heat, range, etc. there is no carbon monoxide unless you light your furniture on fire!

New York
N.Y. Exec. Law § 378 â Standards for New York state uniform fire prevention and building code.
Requires New York Fire Prevention and Building Code to adopt standards for installation of carbon monoxide detectors requiring that every one or two-family dwelling constructed or offered for sale after July thirtieth, two thousand two, any dwelling accommodation located in a building owned as a condominium or cooperative in the state constructed or offered for sale after July thirtieth, two thousand two, or any multiple dwellings constructed or offered for sale after August ninth, two thousand five shall have installed an operable carbon monoxide detector of such manufacture, design and installation standards as are established by the council. Carbon monoxide detectors required by this section are required only where the dwelling unit has appliances, devices or systems that may emit carbon monoxide or has an attached garage.

I'm scared of dying by Carbon Monoxide. What causes it and how can I prevent it?

Answer
It is a product of combustion of fossil fuels so if you light a gas fire or central heating boiler you will generate it but its normally ventilated outside. If you are worried about it buy an alarm for it they are cheap and about the same size as a smoke detector. These alarms sound off when the gas is detected and last about 7 years before they need replacing.http://www.kiddesafetyeurope.co.uk/utcfs/Templates/Pages/Template-53/0,8062,pageId%3D1276%26siteId%3D401,00.html

What is is the most important environmental issue facing the planet today?

Spitfire

What are you most afraid will happen to the planet that cannot be reversed?
Do you have a healthy environmental conscience?
Do you have faith that mankind will do the right thing and learn to treat the world better before it's too late?
Will Mother Nature win?

Answer
there isnt just one, there are many interelated factors the one thing causing the other which has effects that cause something else to give you a picture i must mention all of them and i have included some solutions

these are some Mega threats that endanger the planet and some solutions

over population, erosian, over pumping of carbon aquifiers(deep wells)
desertification, rising seas, land loss, deforrestation.excess carbon emissions, mass extinction of species and global warming.

DEFORRESTATION if it continues ,is that we could end up looking like Mars.Without an atmosphere ,without water, without air, with out life

the forrests make most of the water that we can drink or use for plant growth(sweet water)
some is condensed from the sea but that reaches only the coastel aereas .
the bulk ,comes from the forests ,and the rivers come from the rainfall which comes from the trees ,
and the trees with precipitation, feed the rivers when it is not raining and keep them running all year round.

If we kill all the trees,we kill the rivers .we kill the rain. we kill us.
the trees also absorb the heat in the day and heat up the place in the night ,so they keep the temperature confertable to live in.

in the dessert the nights are freezing cold and during the days you burn up

CARBON MONOXIDE
the trees absorb carbon emisions ,which is poison to us and they produce oxygen which we need to breathe.

so in short the trees produce the air that we need to breathe.
they also produce wood which is usefull and a wide range of food such as fruits

deforestation must be stopped before desertification goes out of control and consumes the planet.

DESERTIFICATION
the sahara is growing by 7 kilometres every day.
two major desserts in northern china are growing together making one giant dessert and, causing dust storms so making thousands of people refugeese

the trees evaporate a mist which ,which protects us from the strong rays of the sun .

the planet is drying out at an alarming rate.

in the days of the dinasaurs this planet was under an aquiferus manta ,a mist that covered the entire earth ,and there were no desserts .
Count how many there are today, and all of them are as a result of mans actions.
the sahara used to be forrests
arabia ,irak ,iran used to be fertile lands in biblical times
Ghengas Kahn burned all the forrests here and filled the well with water and so turning vast lands into dessert.

Bad agricultural practises is turning vast teritories into desserts ,because of over grazing and the exessive pumping of carbon aquifiers ,the surface aquifiers already having been depleted.
And the use of fertilisers and heavy machinery that compacts the ground which raises the salt in the soil.
Modern agriculture today is doing the same as ghengas kahn but in much bigger territories.

And because agricultural lands are lost, farmers are forced to cultivate highly erodable lands, to keep up with the growing demand for food.an extra 70 million people each year and this is increasing
the world population has doubled in the last 50 years the fasted increase ever since the first homo sapian.

EROSION
soil erosion is almost always as a result of human intervention.
the trees are cut down and these trees existed to provide a cover against the rays of the sun which now dries out the soil ,and the wind can than easily blow away the dust that is formed ,------this is wind erosian

because the trees are no longer there, whose roots bound the soil together ,and because their canapies of foilidge no longer exist the rain now has easy acces to the unprotected ,now dry surface and the rain waters wash away the top soils ,------this is water erosian

farmers plow large plots of land to plant maize or wheat or what ever and as happened in the 20s in the USA,they plowed in straight lines.when the winds came they blew alonfg the straight lines and picking up speed removed millions of tons of top soil(wind erosian) turning vast teritories into dessert deprived of arable soil

today the farmers plow in circles and curves to prevent this building up of speed by the wind,

but still vast sections of land are exposed to the sun which kills the micro biotic life ,that builds the black and rich top soil and tons of water is evaporated by the sun.,

A far better way is a very old concept now newly applied called --no till farming.

after the inicial shaping of the land the tractor is no longer used .or another type of plow head is used which does not break and turn the soil over, but merely makes a deep cut in to which the new plants are planted or sown.
or the seeds are just stuck in an unbroken surface ,which is covered------- by mulch

mulch is a layer of organic material which prevents the soil from drying out by blocking the sun and maintaining its moisture

because the soil is now soft and moist the earthworms devellop and there is no better manure on this earth than that from earth worms, who also airate the soil with their bodely movements sucking in the air .

the mulch also is a cover which protect the soil from the impact of heavy rains which brings the salt to the surface which makes the soil poorer.

the mulch also is the food and conditions for a vast variety of micro biotic life that produces top soil

MUD SLIDES
in Mexico in the mountains the increasing
populations of indigenous peoples are cutting down trees to plant corn ,this land is productive for a few years before it becomes poor and useless for farming.
the roots of the trees that have been cut down rot and tunnels are created with their diaaperance ,with heavy rains these tunnels fill up with water and the soil lifts and moves down wards .

mudslides are caused and large parts of the mountains are exposed to the rock.

the mud destroys the lands beneath and the exposed areas NEVER recover leaving the area with out vegetation forever

to recover eroded soil is a lenthy process ,which involves planting, bushes ,grasses and trees under difficult conditions to hold the soil and to create bariers to stop further movements on the surface and trap any organic matter that ends up there.we can help by adding mulch(chopped organic matter and plant leafy plants to be chopped down for this purpose,.

there are various plants that are exelent for this pupose, like a bean called nescafee which is a monster in normal circumstanses ,it covers an enormous aera ,grows very fast creates tons of leaves ,when fully grown it dies leaving a thick cover of rotting organic material behind.

WATERSHORTAGE,OVERPOPULATION
each year 70 million more people are consuming water but this is ,but a small part of what agriculture uses.

so our consumption of water is ever increasing and our drinkable water supply is shrinking because of polution ,and the production of potable water is less all the time because of deforestation.

in Tasmania one can already exchange one litre of water for 2 litres of petrol.
it is predicted that the wars of the future will be for water.
the water we got in most populated places must be treated or purified before it is acceptable for human consumption.

in Portugal and soutern Spain ,as in many places, wine is cheaper than water.Which would explain the many drunk people there

we are living in a bubble economy and when the bubble bursts
food prices will sky rocket, and so will the price of water.

the wars of the future will be for water

GLOBAL WARMING

because of the green house effect and the desertification this planet is heating up
Each degree rise in temperature signifies 10% crop loss

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.

Green land and the south pole ,which apperantly has a hole in the ozone the size of the usa,are another matter.
this is ice above the sea ,on the land, and melted water will return to the sea .and so duely affect sea levels.the sea has been rising for a long time.
in portugal remains of Roman villas have been discovered 3/4 of a mile in the sea,and in one town the locals say that the sea is eating their town ,in recent years the Dona Philipa golf cours has lost the 16th and 17th hole which have fallen of the cliffs unto the beach.

in California and Florida rising seas have flooded arable land that has been lost
so far only a few millions acres in total globaly ,but this will speed up with the increasing global warming.
And in Antartica arms of ice that even had names because the were so permanent have broken of into the sea.

and we are witness to the first mass extinction of animals since the days of the dinosaurs species being lost by the hour ,to put it conservatively

SOLUTIONS
Global efforts to cut down on carbon emisions, reforestation to capture carbon, sustainable farming practises and ecomomic systems of irrigation, education on family planning to counter overpopulation, water harvesting to fill up subteranian water supplies, environmentally friendly energy systems, efficient public trans port to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine, global distribution of food supplies.encouraging people(to return to the land) to be autosufficient (with the internet business is not any more confined to the cities),urban planning to include vegetation, stop building more high ways,

agricultural devellopment programs for 3rd world countries.

if every one in the world, who could, would plant a garden ,this would take the stress of the farmers, add to the bio-mass and so the humidity and put a lot more food into circulation.

so what you can do is plant a tree, clean up rubbish, leave bins for people to put their rubbish in,leave notice boards explaining that you cleaned and ask people to co-operate,

and dont put your own organic rubbish together with the rest, seperate and classify your rubbish,70 %of contamination is because of organic material and this is the easiest to take care of ,you make a small compost heap in a shady place in the garden and all the organic waste of the house can go here ,at times cover it with leaves or sand.
the rich compost which results you put back on your plants.
this does not smell or create bugs, the decomposition kill about every thing.

if you can have a couple of bantum chickens which eat 70%of garden pests and they do not rake the ground and kill the plants as ordinairy chickens do. Source(s) my humble confused beginning of a space
