My house is 20 years old and it is a 1 1/2 story with a full basement. The gas furnace/water heaters are in the basement. Access to the basement is through the interior of the house and it's walk-out. I'm planning on totally replacing the smoke detectors, they are not hard wired. With this considered, how many battery operated smoke detectors should I get for my home? 2600 sq feet finished living space with a full unfinished basement. Where should I install the Carbon Monoxide detector?

Answer
Check with your local fire department and they will be GLAD to come to your house and show you where to put up all your detectors and also what type of fire extinguishers to have and where to hang them. And it's a good idea in another aspect...the fire department refreshes themselves on your location. They may also provide window stickers for bedrooms and pets.

Can I break a North Carolina rental lease over 2 gas leaks within 5 months?

I have had 2 gas leaks within a 5 month period. Carbon monoxide detectors were not installed untill after the leaks. We want to get out because of the danger that it might happen again. We have pets, a parrot especially that the gas could kill with only small amounts present.
My neighbor was told by the NC attorney general said she could break the lease due to the gas leaking from my house into her ajoining apartment.

Answer
No. The landlord did not cause the gas leaks! This is NOT their fault! Even if it was you cannot break a lease over repair issues without a court order. If they have fixed the known leaks and did install the carbon monoxide detectors then they have done all that they are legally required to do.

NOBODY can 100% gguarantee that any repair done will not happen again. You cannot live in fear. Are you going to move every time something has to been fixed in a place because it may happen again?

EDIT: If that is correct then it would be a direct conflict with the standard laws.
