Last night at 1:00 am my smoke detector went off randomly for the first time ever. I had to tear it off from the ceiling to turn it off. There was no smoke so could it have detected carbon monoxide? Or was it just a malfunction because it is more than 10 years old?

Answer
when it does that it means you have to replace the battery

What malfunction causes carbon monoxide, natural gas forced air furnace?

After this brown out, we have had a few cases co poisoning in my area.
I checked the furnace today and my filter was upside down side ways in it.
I just got a couple new co detectors and these badges that I can stick in the suspected area to check levels.
Anyone used these before?
Any tips?
Thanks

Answer
The most common cause of CO is related to vent problems-i.e. cracked or plugged vent piping. A furnace can also create CO if the internal heat chamber is cracked.
