I'm assuming you have a furnace that burns some sort of fossil fuel (natural gas, heating oil, propane, etc.), thus you are required to have a detector in your mobile home.

In Illinois now the law is every home must have a carbon monoxide detector, but I live in and enterly electric home no gas for anything. Do i need one in my home?

I need a list of all the places carbon monoxide can leak from in the home, and why it leaks. I overreact I guess but I just want to be safe so I'm worried please help!!!

Carbon monoxide forms when an carbon based fuel (all gas, petrol, fuel, ethanol) doesn't burn with enough oxygen to form carbon dioxide. This happens everytime you use a gas device, because the oxygen is just not concentrated enough in the local area to allow for the fuel to burn completely and leave no carbon monoxide. This is natural and not to worry about.

I imagine you're most likely to be at risk from faulty combustion devices like furnaces, gas fireplaces and heaters and spirit burners. Anything that burns gas and isn't in a well ventilated area (that's why outdoor stoves are fine, the wind just blows the carbon monoxide away) should be checked.
I stress that these products would have had to meet a certain level of quality before being sold to you - and that regular maintanence would avoid any leaks/ build up. If in doubt, consult your local firebrigade - i'm serious, they'd be glad to help, it's their job.

My home has no gas what so ever and no attached garage, so do I still need a carbon monoxide detector?

Carbon monoxide is a by-product of combustion. If you have any sort of fuel burning system in your house, get a CO detector. Such fuels include oil (furnace), propane, natural gas, coal and wood.

If your home is heated electrically, no combustion takes place, so a CO detector would be of absolutely no use to you and a total waste of money.

But, you should always have an operable SMOKE DETECTOR in your home, since fires can start from any number of sources (a forgotten candle or cigarette, an electrical short, a pile of oily rags forgotten after a renovation, etc.)

My house is 20 years old and it is a 1 1/2 story with a full basement. The gas furnace/water heaters are in the basement. Access to the basement is through the interior of the house and it's walk-out. I'm planning on totally replacing the smoke detectors, they are not hard wired. With this considered, how many battery operated smoke detectors should I get for my home? 2600 sq feet finished living space with a full unfinished basement. Where should I install the Carbon Monoxide detector?

Check with your local fire department and they will be GLAD to come to your house and show you where to put up all your detectors and also what type of fire extinguishers to have and where to hang them. And it's a good idea in another aspect...the fire department refreshes themselves on your location. They may also provide window stickers for bedrooms and pets.

I just plugged in a first alert carbon monoxide detector down in basement. The horn will sound once or twice every 20 minutes or so and the red light will flash every so often also. Is this a malfunction or is there CO in my home?

Can carbon monoxide get into the passenger cabin of your car?

Hi:

I ask this question obviously because I tend to be a bit paranoid about things.

There is nothing wrong with my car as it is only about 4 1/2 years old and has slightly less than 14K miles on it and is in mint condition and practically as good as new and I take good care of it. It is a 2009 Ford Escape Limited with a 3.0L V6 engine.

Now the obvious question is, besides obviously doing something stupid such as sitting in your car with the engine running in an enclosed space or the exhausts pipe being snow plow clogged and such, is it possible for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to leak into the passenger cabin?

I have heard the only possible other way that could happen is if there was a leak in the exhaust system even when in an open area driving or at idle? Is this true.

And if there was a leak in the exhaust system, is it likely that dangerous levels of carbin monoxide would build up in the cabin so fast that it would kill you before you even noticed anything was wrong in the middle of driving on the road?

And if there was a leak in the exhaust system, would your car tell you something was wrong right away or would you notice something was not right such as poor acceleration or something smelling or such. Or would a check engine light come or some other service type light come on?

I am not asking this question because I have noticed anything wrong with my car. In fact once again my car is in perfect shape, but this is a general question about any car, whether modern or older in the what if an exhaust leak happens?

I ask because why is there such a big deal about putting carbon monoxide detectors in homes of all types, but not of having one in your car?

I mean if there was improper or blocked ventilation on your gas furnace or incomplete flame burning, it would send carbon monoxide right into your house and make you sick or even kill you which would set off a carbon monoxide alarm so you knew to get out of there.

But a a leak in your exhaust system on your car, the carbon monoxide could come right into the passenger cabbin and you may not even know it as it is by itself odorless and it could kill you.

Or are there built in alarms in new cars? Or if not, is it a different reason in cars than homes? Such as maybe your car would act up in plenty of other ways before it would even be possible for enough dangerous levels of CO to build up in the cabin after an exhaust leak that you would know it needs to be fixed right away?


So the moral of the story is, can an exhaust leak go unnoticed and send carbon monoxide into the cabin and kill you. Is it something to be worried about and should the exhaust system be inspected ever year just in case. Or should I get a CO alarm and put it in my car?

Beginning as of July 1, 2011, all homes of California must install carbon monoxide detectors. However does the law specify where the detectors are to be installed and how many? Should I just replace every smoke detector with a carbon monoxide/smoke detector or add carbon monoxide detectors in specific spots?

Our towns code states that there should be one for every smoke-detector. And there has to be 1 smoke detector on each story + one in each room that could, possibly, maybe be used as a bedroom someday + one directly outside each room that could, possibly, maybe be used someday as a bedroom + one inside and outside each hallway + one by each egress door + one within 5 feet of the furnace + one in each bathroom
I would need 17 in the house I'm living in. Since the regulations are so stupid and overbearing, I only have 1 (and am in gross violation of the International Property Maintenance Code)

btw I live in a crappy little ghost town in the Midwest
Republicans LOVE pushing regulations on poor people

Which Carbon Monoxide Alarm is best and how many should a home have?

They just passed a law in Illinois saying that you have to have a Carbon Monoxide Detector in your home. Is there a difference between the plug-ins or the battery operated alarm? Also, does a home only need one or should there be an alarm near all appliances?

same rules apply for a smoke detector, one on each level of the house, especially near sleeping areas. Plug in with a battery back up are a little better as people do not tend to remember to change batteries yearly, and a detector does not do you any good if it's dead.

Also if you are a smoker or there is smokers in your house, be aware that sometimes the CO from cigarettes can set up detectors
