Carbon Monoxide Detectors?

I live in a 2 story home and I was wondering where you were supposed to or the most ideal place is to put a carbon monoxide detector? I currently have it in the basement but I'm afraid that if it starts going off we may not hear it on the 2nd floor.

They should be mounted near bedrooms and living areas. It is recommended you install one on each floor.It is not recommended that you install them in garages, kitchens or furnace rooms. Installation in these areas could lead to nuisance alarms and may expose the sensor to substances that could damage the unit or contaminate it or may not be heard by persons in the home. Read this from the manual.I have mine plugged into a receptacle about 12 to 16 in. from the floor. BTW: The one I have plugged into the receptacle does have a battery backup,they all do in case the power goes out.

I have a health condition that results in me having constant headaches, but for the last 2 weeks my husband has been complaining about headaches and was sick to his stomach last night and i got a bloody nose for the first time in 15 years this morning. i was wondering if this could be due to carbon monoxide poisioning. i know the headaches are a syptom but what about the rest? i know i should buy a test but there is a huge storm here and i don't want to drive.

if you suspect CO, then you definitely should open a few windows, at least a bit.

Also purchasing a co detector is definately a good idea, but be sure to plug it into an outlet close to the floor.

seriously, CO is definitely not something to play around with..
My uncle died from CO poisoning, started the car in the garage to get warm, and accidentally fell asleep....

So, open a window, if that helps, you should get a detector. put it near your furnace if you have one that runs on propane/natural gas.

IF it is detected, then you should get a technician to come and look at your furnace, as CO is caused by incomplete combustion, not enough air for the fire, and could also be symptom of blocked/malfunctioning flue/chimney

IF you do not have a combustion furnace, its not particularly likely that you would have alot of CO in your house.

The quick answer? open a window a bit, get some fresh air, although if its -20 C or so like it is here, dont open it to much :D

on a nighthawk detector what numbers are considered unsafe?

We have a Nighthawk carbon monoxide detector in our home. The number 8 just recently appeared on the screen. Should we be concerned? No alarm has gone off.

I just installed one of those the other day and I would have sworn that 8 was an error code that I got and that you just have to unplug the detector and plug it back in. But I just looked at the manual online and there is no mention of 8 being an error code. It does display "888" for a few seconds when you fist plug it in.

If it is steadily displaying an 8 then that is the level of carbon monoxide that it has detected since last reset. On the one hand that is a very low level and is safe - some references put the maximum continuous exposure level at 35 ppm and some say 50 ppm. Either way, 8 ppm is very low.

But then you have to wonder where the 8 ppm came from and if it is from a leak than may get worse over time. Having a CO detector is a good thing, it will make plenty of noise if the levels ever get to the point that you need to take action.

You could call Kidde at 800-880-6788 and talk to them if you want some reassurance.

I'm moving into a rental house that has a big rectangular metal space heater. It has to be plugged in but it's fueled by propane. That kinda baffles me, but whatever, I've always had CH/AC. My question is what do I need to know about this thing? All I know so far is that I'll need a carbon monoxide detector which the re-modelers are already installing.

A lot of space heaters do not require electricity to operate, but they have blower fans as an option to help circulate the heat.

Check the rating plate on the heater. It should state the minimum clearances to be maintained from combustibles etc.

These type of heaters work quite well for heating an open area. You wont get a lot of benefit from it in rooms off of the main room, but they work pretty well...They are PERFECTLY SAFE if they are maintained and serviced properly. If they weren't they wouldn't be allowed in homes.

yes, your skin turns bright red and you die.

There are probably city or county public service groups you can contact, tell them you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. But you should work it out with your mother first. Is there any other relative you can talk to?

edit: what happens if you turn on the detector when your mother is not home? Does it go off? If it does, and your mother insists on ignoring it, contact the police immediately. Getting her angry is minor compared to dying.

Always good to have a hard wired system through out the house.But Kiddie makes a great detector that is battery operated and will do the job as good as any hard wired system.Just remember in October to change the batteries whether you need to or not it is good practice.October is fire prevention month so do this and you will be safe.

You can purchase a CO detector at Home Depot that is a multifunction detector for CO and explosive gases. It detects propane, natural gas, and even goes off if my wife leaves the door to the bathroom open and it reads her hair spray propellant ( which is flammable by the way). It is under $30 in stock at your local Home Depot or online.

if it is a plug-in unit get an extension cord and hold it up to your car muffler with your car running.

I just plugged in a first alert carbon monoxide detector down in basement. The horn will sound once or twice every 20 minutes or so and the red light will flash every so often also. Is this a malfunction or is there CO in my home?
