as in natural gas? no, it's intended to detect carbon monoxide from a poorly vented gas burning appliance.

call the gas co if you think you have a leak, they'll come out and test.

My dad baked a pizza and then probably about 20 minutes after taking the pizza out, to heat up the house, he opened the oven for like 15 minutes with all widows and door closed. now, it kinda smells in the kitchen (not from pizza. it's a weird smell). So I opened a window or two, and a door, but I still kinda smell it and I feel kinda weird. I don't know if I just psyched myself or if my headache and body-aches are actually a side effect. Do you think my house has a really bad carbon monoxide leak? If so, what should I do? Please help I don't want to die lol.
No cause we use a gas stove and my mom says that im not supposed to heat the house with the oven so yeah idk and i meant *45 minutes not 15 lol oops mistake.

You can't smell carbon monoxide. You can, however, smell natural gas - they add a sulphur smell to it. Does it smell like rotten eggs?

EDIT: For the people going on and on about carbon monoxide - you are missing the point! If they can smell it, then it's not CO. And if you get a CO detector, it does not go on your ceiling, because CO drops, it doesn't rise like hot air/smoke. And someone (Ray) doesn't know what he's talking about.

You did not say where the possible carbon monoxide leak was suspected. Is it in a house or in a car? If it is in a car, go take an exhaust emissions SMOG Test. CO gases have no odor and are not usually detectable by humans. If a CO leak is in a house, you can buy a CO detector that goes on a wall in the area of bedrooms. The detector sets off an alarm that will awaken almost anybody. If you suspect a CO leak from your gas furnace, you can call your local gas company and they will come to your house, check and test the flame/burning, and fix the air/fuel mixture if it is not correct. A gas furnace flame should be blue and not yellow or white or black in color. This service is usually a no charge service, but there are companies that will come clean your furnace and adjust it for a reasonable charge. Make sure they also check the chimney for excessive tar accumulation, which can result in chimney fires. CO2 or Carbon Dioxide is a harmless, odorless gas and the major component of the air you breath.

we have a dryer and washing in a small room and when we go near it, there is a slight scent of CO1. does the dryer need to be replaced or is it something with the hose?

Carbon monoxide is oderless, which is why they sell CO detectors. Do you perhaps mean natural gas? It is a gas dryer not an electric dryer?

Locate the gas shut off valve. Off is when the handle is perpendicular to the pipe.

You can alternatively contact the fire department. They will make the situation safe at no charge. You should CERTAINLY do this if you have a strong smell.

A plumber can fix the gas leak if it is in a joint in the pipe. If it is a problem with the dryer, then you need an appliance repair person. It could be either, but probably more likely the dryer.

Some repair professionals use soapy water which they brush on joints to find the point of the leak. It will bubble where gas is escaping. I would try a repair person to do this as you will want an expert.

it's pretty slight and i only smell it when i'm standing in front of the stove. the gas company came out and they guy had his detector or whatever. He said that it might be carbon monoxide and it might be incomplete combustion from one of the pilot lights and that they may need adjustment and that it wasn't a natural gas leak. I only smell it when I stand in front of the gas stove. He also recommended I open a door or window when I have the stove or oven on. He also pointed out the debris flakes under the stove cover as fuel debris or whatever. I put a carbon monoxide detector in the kitchen for about an hour and it didn't go off. What should I do? Call an appliance repair company? will it be expensive? Thanks!

after having our boiler serviced we were told of a gas escape which has now been sorted with new pipes but does anyone know if there is detector for us to test this in the future like there is a carbon monoxide detector?

In the US the gas company provides this service absoutely free at any time of the day or night on any day.
If you call them for an inspection they will give you an appointment. But if you call because you smell gas they will be there pronto.
I would assume they are the same over there??

Why does my carbon monoxide alarm keep going off?

Everytime my mother cooks using the stove, the carbon monoxide detector goes off. It seems like every sunday when she cooks for a long period of time faithfully the detector goes off like an hour after the stove has been shut off. I take it down remove the battery and open the windows. about 20 minutes later i put it back up....no alarm goes off. the battery is new so that shouldnt be an issue. The only thing i am fearing is a possible gas leak. What should i do?

It could be a couple of things.
How old is the detector? They have a sensor that only lasts so long and they should be replaced every 5 years.
If your mother is cooking with gas is there an exhaust fan that removes the air to the outside of the house? If not it could be caused by the recirculation of the combustion air back into the flames.
A good flame should also be a light blue, if it is a lazy yellow flame then there isn't enough primary air (air that is mixed with the gas before combustion) if that is the case then you should ask someone who knows how to adjust it and they should also check for soot which may be evidence of flame impingement.
Gas, like electricity, it is safe if done properly but can be very dangerous if done wrong and Carbon monoxide is very dangerous and any warnings should not be ignored.

Can carbon monoxide get into the passenger cabin of your car?

Hi:

I ask this question obviously because I tend to be a bit paranoid about things.

There is nothing wrong with my car as it is only about 4 1/2 years old and has slightly less than 14K miles on it and is in mint condition and practically as good as new and I take good care of it. It is a 2009 Ford Escape Limited with a 3.0L V6 engine.

Now the obvious question is, besides obviously doing something stupid such as sitting in your car with the engine running in an enclosed space or the exhausts pipe being snow plow clogged and such, is it possible for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to leak into the passenger cabin?

I have heard the only possible other way that could happen is if there was a leak in the exhaust system even when in an open area driving or at idle? Is this true.

And if there was a leak in the exhaust system, is it likely that dangerous levels of carbin monoxide would build up in the cabin so fast that it would kill you before you even noticed anything was wrong in the middle of driving on the road?

And if there was a leak in the exhaust system, would your car tell you something was wrong right away or would you notice something was not right such as poor acceleration or something smelling or such. Or would a check engine light come or some other service type light come on?

I am not asking this question because I have noticed anything wrong with my car. In fact once again my car is in perfect shape, but this is a general question about any car, whether modern or older in the what if an exhaust leak happens?

I ask because why is there such a big deal about putting carbon monoxide detectors in homes of all types, but not of having one in your car?

I mean if there was improper or blocked ventilation on your gas furnace or incomplete flame burning, it would send carbon monoxide right into your house and make you sick or even kill you which would set off a carbon monoxide alarm so you knew to get out of there.

But a a leak in your exhaust system on your car, the carbon monoxide could come right into the passenger cabbin and you may not even know it as it is by itself odorless and it could kill you.

Or are there built in alarms in new cars? Or if not, is it a different reason in cars than homes? Such as maybe your car would act up in plenty of other ways before it would even be possible for enough dangerous levels of CO to build up in the cabin after an exhaust leak that you would know it needs to be fixed right away?


So the moral of the story is, can an exhaust leak go unnoticed and send carbon monoxide into the cabin and kill you. Is it something to be worried about and should the exhaust system be inspected ever year just in case. Or should I get a CO alarm and put it in my car?

Are there any gases that cause bananas to ripen quickly?

So I'm wondering if there are any gases that can cause bananas to ripen quickly. I'm not interested in the gases they produce and etc. The reason I'm asking is because when I brought my bananas home from the store last night within hours they had large brown spots that were not there when I picked them out. On top of that the cats were acting a little funny so I'm wondering if it's a sign of a gas leak in the house. I'm a little concerned because our carbon monoxide detector is broken.

Ethylene will cause rapid ripening in bananas. That causes the bananas to release more ethylene. Once they start ripening it can happen quickly. They also may have recently been treated. Other gases aren't going to cause that ripening. Ethylene is a hormone that causes ripening. You aren't likely to get that gas in the house. It is possible since it is a trace contaminant of natural gas and can also be produce by the combustion of wood. If you had a gas leak or poor ventilation from a fire place you might get enough to speed the ripening of the bananas. They naturally accelerate their ripening so there is no reason to assume that just from the bananas. It is still possible though.

"Bananas use ethylene to stimulate fruit ripening. A bunch of bananas will stay green for a long time until the ethylene concentration in the air around them becomes high enough. When that happens, then they begin ripening and they begin releasing more ethylene, which makes them ripen faster and release more ethylene, etc. In this way, all of the bananas will ripen very suddenly and simultaneously. Keeping bananas in a plastic bag will make them ripen much more quickly than if you leave them out in the open, because the plastic bag traps the ethylene and thus makes its concentration rise more quickly."

I doubt that it would take a repair person very long, a service call, probably in the $45-$75 area depending on your location, plus time and materials, say another 1/2 hour. I'm guessing $100 total. You might well try this yourself. Go to a store that sells welders and welding supplies and ask for a "welding tip cleaner". It will be in the $5-7 range and is a small aluminum case with a series of round wires in various diameters, which are actually files. They are used to clean gas welding tips which have various sizes of orifices. Shut off the gas valve behind the stove, and use the tip cleaner to clean the pilot light orifices. The small files are flexible and will bend and you can increase to larger sizes until you feel metal to metal contact. Then, turn the gas back on and relight your pilots. If there is no improvement, you aren't out much, and the tip cleaner can come in handy. They are great for cleaning the windshield washer nozzles on your car. Good luck.

My mum keeps saying she is getting a whiff of gas. She said she got it when she was in the bath which was about 8 hours ago.
I can't smell it but since she mentioned it my nose is tingling. Out boiler has been going funny over these few weeks shutting itself off.
In my bedroom by the boiler we have a carbon monoxide detector. Would it detect a gas leak?

No unless it says on it that it is a multi gas detector. Most carbon monoxide detectors only detect carbon monoxide. There are some high end ones that detect other gases but these are well marked.
