Hi, i can't seem to understand how to get the equation for these assignments. The answers are in the back of the book but my answer is never the same. I Hope you can explain the process for me. Here are the problems:

1. A riverfront boat storage area is rectangular with fencing on all sides except the side along the river. If 550m of fencing is used and the side along the river is 50m shorter than the two longer sides, find the dimensions of the site. ANSWER: 150m by 200m

2. One laptop computer has 5.5 times the storage capacity of another. Together they can store 65 Gbytes of information. What is the storage capacity of each laptop computer? ANSWER: 10 Gbytes and 55 Gbytes

3. The online cost for an in-home smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm is $4.29 more than twice the cost of a leading competitor's unit. If the two units are purchased together, their combined cost is $87.36. What is the cost of the more expensive alarm? ANSWER: $59.67

3 sides of a fence which create a rectangle

x = the longer side (two of these)
x - 50 = the shorter side (one of these; the other is the river)

Total fencing used on the 3 sides that have fencing: 550

x + x + (x-50) = 550
3x - 50 = 550
3x = 600
x = 200
y = 200 -x = 150

x = Longer side of fence = 200
x - 50 = shorter side of fence = 200 - 50 = 150

Dimensions = 150m x 200m

Question 2:

x = computer 1
y = computer 2
x = 5.5y

x + y = 65

5.5y + y = 65
6.5y = 65
y = 65/6.5
y = 10

Total = 65
x + 10 = 65
x = 55


Question 3:

Alarm 1 = x
Alarm 2 = y

x = 2y + 4.29
x + y = 87.36

Substitute (2y+4.29) for x in that equation

2y + 4.29 + y = 87.36
3y + 4.29 = 87.36
3y = 83.07
y = 83.07/3
y = 27.69

This is the price of the less expensive one

The pilot light in my gas furnace goes out every day, is it a health hazard?

My landlord refuses to repair the gas furnace, even though the pilot light has been going out on a weekly basis for all the 8 months I have been his tenant. The only thing he has done so far is (last week) to get a plumber to install a new ignotion switch. (Previously, it was having to be relit with a long match as the switch was broken.)

Putting a new switch on only makes it easier to relight, it doesn't solve the problem of why it was going out to begin with. Since this was done 5 days ago, the gas has gone out every day, the last two days it was twice in one day. The ladt time we had to re-light it todsy, it took numetous attempts over about 20 minutes.

I am a NY tenant. We rent a 2 family house with my family on the ground floor. when the gas boiler goes out, it means the tenant upstairs has no hot water either. She told us this has been going on for 4 years, yet does not seem willing to 'rock' the boat.

First question is my highest concern- is this a health hazard to my family and I? I have had a huge increase in migraines and wonder if this is connected.

Can I force my landlord to repair it?

In NY, is the landlord obligated to 1/ install smoke and carbon monocide detectors and 2/ to have the gas boiler (furnace) inspected annually? This is a legal requirement in many European countries.

If this is a forced air furnace there is a very important and possibly dangerous situation that hasn't been raised. A cracked heat exchanger will not only keep blowing the pilot out but can cause carbon monoxide buildup.

Relight the pilot and burner and wait for the blower to cycle on.If you see the flame fluttering, or worse yet, if the flame starts moving towards the the front part of the heat exchanger cell shut it off completely and possibly start shopping for a new furnace!

However a severely rusted burner assembly on some brands can cause the same symptoms. Hopefully a good cleaning with a wire brush will cure your problem.

What can make a CO detector false alarm?

I am seeing carbon monoxide detectors on my boat false alarm at times. These are both the regular variety and the very sensitive aviation types. There are no boats or engines running nearby, no flames, aerosols in use, no combustion engines of any kind. What other gasses might cause these to false alarm?

It's possible that the humidity is affecting the performance of the sensors as well. Try running a hair dryer on an open detector to dry out the components.

If you're on the ocean, the salt could be causing issues as well. You'll probably need to switch them out if it's a salt issue, as cleaning them probably isn't an option.

Ozone can be determined by its sharp smell if in enough concentrations. In Central Florida it is a common smell in the air after a thunder and lightening storm.

NO2 is a brown gas that is easily seen in concentrations in the distant near the horizon.

SO2 can be determined by bubbling the air though water and testing for increased acidity. It also has a sulfur like smell in concentrations.

CO is the most difficult gas. It is colorless and odorless. It will any animal life that is forced to breath it. There are CO detectors that can be bought. I had one in the cabin of my boat which had an inboard gasoline engine.

All of these gases can be detected by a gas chromatograph in a lab.

1. Get a carbon monoxide detector and learn the odor of natural gas.
2. Be sure to have a life vest.
3. Have a 5 x 2 inch diameter candle (2 inches wide, 5 long), matches and a blanket in your car. It will keep you warm enough to live until help can come.
4. Have a cell phone that's charged and working. Otherwise, good luck with that.
5. Same as number four. Also, a good pair of running shoes might be good too.

How much would a live-aboard boat cost?

I'm 22 years old and moving out of my parents' house soon, and I thought instead of buying/renting an apartment, to buy a boat I could live on (Not sure if it's possible to rent. If it is, then that's a possible option). I'd probably want to live-aboard for about 3-5 years. I'd want the boat to be capable of cruising on the ocean coast. Also, I'd want it to be able to sail to Catalina Island in California from Los Angeles; that's about as far as I'd want to sail out. I'm going to be the only one living aboard. Any price ranges or any other tips would be helpful.

Here in California, to do a full time live-aboard, you'll be paying an additional fee for the privilege. I would advise you to have at least 30'+. I own a 60' motor yacht and it's very expensive. Most CA marinas have limited "Full Time" live aboard slips due to the requirements for water/sewer hookups as required by Environmental Laws. The live-aboard additional cost is an additional $250 on top of the regular fees. There are special rules that you must adhere to also. Finding a "Rental" isn't likely. I don't live onboard my yacht full time, but spend more time there than my land-based home. I'd recommend a sailboat instead of a power boat. Maintenance will be lighter and costs less than a power boat. Find something with a decent galley that you can work with, a good bath room with running water, and a sleeping area that fits you. Taller people have the hardest time with this. Like John said, it's the heat coming into the craft that becomes intolerable, not the cold.

I've traveled to Mexico with my smaller 26' Express Cruiser, and this summer will be traveling with my motor yacht to Alaska.

A few safety items that you need to have is a carbon monoxide detector, at least 3 fire extinguishers, and a VHF radio for offshore communications. It's also nice to have a AC/DC TV to watch and an AM/FM/CD radio too.

Remember, you won't have much storage space! So you won't have a lot of clothing and shoes. You'll never have much more than 3 days of food on board on average. You'll need bottled water in one gallon size bottles stored onboard.

I've enjoyed my 26', but I love having more of a home with my 60' yacht. With that I'm fully self sufficient. I grocery shop once a week for the yacht.

I will try to make a long story short. But you need some details though...
we've lived in this camper before we got this place we are in now. It was hell and we were so grateful to escape.

So, we HAD a nice place to live and everything is going fine when all of a sudden my fiance gets laid off work (i have a medical condition so i don't work in public, and can't seem to find a decent work at home job that isn't a scam.).

Now, we are not able to pay the rent at the end of the month so we have to leave. Our only option is to live in this 15' camper trailer that his dad has

The problem is, the only place to put it is on his dads property next to his cousins house. His cousin does not want us there because he is scared we will 'snitch' on him for his illegal drug use and trafficking. (i hate the guy and he hates me)

I do not want to live there because

The shower floor has cracks in it and the bathroom/shower is tiny.

Yes, this is a desperate cry for help if anyone has any advice or resources. I'm in Texas. We're already on food stamps and the local churches are exhausted of funds because of all the other people who are in the same boat we are.

i read the first answerer, and thank you for answering without being a smartass. as for the 2nd answerer it was a CO detector that WE bought and put in there. it is a 78 model camper. I never said we couldn't afford food. he JUST got laid off and the unemployment doesn't begin till towards the end of the month. we wont have the money in time. the internet is paid till the end of the month, same for the other bill except electric which is due the 30th.

Please God you don't have any children!: no, i am not that stupid. I wouldn't put my body through that nor put myself through having to work 2 jobs to support ungrateful kids.

It is time to move. Looks, there are millions of people in Africa that are dying of thirst everyday and we send money to these people all the time to get them water and allow them to survive. All we really have to do is move them to water and solve the problem. Same thing here, only in another fashion. There are no jobs where you are. MOVE. Go somewhere that will accept you and help you out. If you have the medical condition you say you do, you should be able to get some relief from social security or another government organization. I know plenty of people that are OCD and have PTSD. They are actually fine people but can't hold a job for 5 minutes because of concentration issues. They get all sorts of government money. Secondly, your fiance should be able to find a job. Move to an area where the jobs are. I know my answer sounds too simple but look at it from all aspects. (Also, know that I am not against helping out the people of 3rd world countries, I just think there are better places and people that should have a whack at the billions of dollars spent out of our country before the homeless in our cities are overlooked.) Anyway, that is just my opinion. In a more complete answer to your question, do not move where you are being asked to live. It is a nice offer, but frankly the cousins need to see jail time, and the dad needs to say to his kid he loves him and all that rot, but he cares more for him then to force him into a camper. Good luck in whatever you do.
