Why does my carbon monoxide detector keep beeping?

MirandaT

2 days ago my detector started a slow beep every 30 seconds. I has no idea what was going on & turned the heater off & opened the windows. It stopped after about 10mon & I thought I solved the problem. Then yesterday it did it again! I did the same process over & even pushed the test/silence button to make it stop. I called & was told that it was a low battery that needed to be changed, So I went & bought new ones to exchange with the old. Again, I thought I solved the problem. Now, only 8 hours after purchasing new batteries the slow beeping has started up again!! I don't know what to do?? The heater hasn't been on since the first incident yesterday & the windows are still open. What should I do?!

Answer
What I would suggest is to try new batteries, If that fails, then put a different detector in same area and see if it happens with that one. If not, its safe to say you have a faulty detector. However, if it too goes off then there is always a possibility that you have a monoxide problem. Hope this helps.

carbon monoxide detectors?

My CO monitor beeps randomly from time to time. Is this normal? I assume that if I did have a CO problem, it wouold beep like crazy. As is, it beeps only a few times every now and then. Should I be concerned?

Answer
1) You may have a battery issue. All detectors that operate on batteries or have battery back-up will CHIRP occasionally to remind you that the battery needs to be replaced. The battery may be low on voltage or it no longer can take a "load' to operate the device.

2) You my have a dirty detector. Sometimes the CHIRPING may continue even after replacing the battery. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust that accumulates over time. Take your time and do a thorough job.

3) You my have a bad detector. Smoke and CO detectors do not last forever. They should be replaced if 10 years old or more.

Note: Smoke and CO detector batteries should be replaced at least once a year. Don't get into a lazy habit of waiting until it CHIRPS to replace it. A good rule of thumb is to replace all detector & alarm batteries when the clocks are changed for Day Light Saving Time.

Always use name brand Alkali batteries, bargain batteries are not a good idea in this application.

All detectors & alarms are designed with "smart" technology. Listen to what they're telling you and don't ignore the warning signals. They can't save your life if they're not working.

Is it possible to not show signs of carbon monoxide posioning?

my carbon monoxide detector keeps beeping and on the instructions it said it beeps in a specific pattern if needs to be replaced. my fiancée took it out of the wall and it beeped in all sorts of other patterns. we plugged it back in and it isn't beeping. so is it not working and there is carbon monoxide or is it fine and I'm just over reacting? none of the dogs or my fiancée and I have any symptoms of poisoning. what should we do?

Answer
It sounds to me like the detector simply needed to be reset for some reason.
Hemoglobin, the part of the blood that carries oxygen from the lungs to the cells of the body, has about 5 times the affinity for carbon monoxide as it does for oxygen. That means that, in the prescience of CO, hemoglobin will pick it up and hold onto it to the exclusion of oxygen. Co poisoning results when the blood no longer carries oxygen only CO.
symptoms of CO poisoning are, Severe headache, nausea, lethargy, and a ruddy or bright pink complexion. Hemoglobin turns bright read in the presence of oxygen and even brighter red in the presence of CO

SO, I was wondering, I have a carbon monoxide detector in my basement, we also have one on the main floor, and one upstairs, the one in the basement is beeping, it says 0, so I don't know what is wrong with it, the other ones aren't going off, any ideas why this is? It just beeps every few seconds.
It stopped beeping after I re-set it once.

Answer
If it is just beeping like that, and the indicator says 0, it means the battery is getting low. Change it and it should be fine.

How come my oven keeps setting off my carbon monoxide detector after I cleaned it?

Peace

I recently cleaned my oven with a natural cleaning solution of baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice. Ever since then, my carbon monoxide detector keeps going off almost each and every time I use the oven. The beeping stops almost as soon as I turn off the oven. Maybe I didn't rinse the oven well enough?

Answer
CO is a byproduct of an incomplete combustion process and quite dangerous to people. It is orderless and colorless and will suffocate a person. I assume that you have a natural gas oven.
Some possible causes are excess combustion air in the ambient during the combustion process or an insufficient fuel supply.
I would contact an appliance repair company. You may even contact the Gas Company and they will fix it, maybe at no charge.

Firemen came to my house because the carbon monoxide detector was beeping and they said there was a leve of 5. Is this alright to sleep in if I have all windows in my room open? The firemen didn't say I should leave but I need a final opinion of what to do

Answer
If the firemen didn't say you should leave then it's probably not high enough for concern. After all, they've been trained in that field of expertise.
